Magic's Isaac undergoes surgery, out for rest of season
ORLANDO, Fla. — Orlando Magic forward Jonathan Isaac will miss the rest of NBA season after undergoing a torn adductor muscle in his left leg, the Magic announced Friday.
Isaac had played in only 11 games this season after missing more than two seasons with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in the same leg and hamstring injuries. He averaged 5 points, 4 rebounds and 1.27 steals in 11.3 minutes per game, and his teammates had raved about how he helped them, especially defensively.
He had been on the team's injury list for the past two games, indicating he had a strained hamstring and adductor.
A magnetic resonance imaging on Wednesday confirmed the injury, after he said he had discomfort after practice Tuesday, the team said.
"Our thoughts are with Jonathan, whose fortitude in dealing with adversity is unique," Magic President of Basketball Operations Jeff Weltman said in a statement Friday. "Jonathan has worked extremely hard to return to the court this season and has demonstrated his impact to our team. We will be on his side as he focuses on the work ahead."
Isaac had expressed how joyful he felt to return to NBA basketball since he was activated.
The injury is significant, considering how much time he has missed previously with leg injuries.
Isaac, the No. 6 overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft, originally tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in an NBA game against the Sacramento Kings on August 2, 2020. He underwent surgery to repair the ligament and began a lengthy rehab. During that process, the team announced in late March 2022 that Isaac would miss the rest of the 2021-22 season because he needed a surgical procedure to repair what it called a "minor right hamstring injury." He missed all of the 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons and the start of the 2022-23 season because of his leg injuries.
From 2017-2019, Isaac played in only 136 games because of injuries or illness, starting 106 — including five playoff games. He averaged 9.3 points, 5.4 rebounds, 1.1 assists, 1.51 blocks and 1.07 steals in 25.8 minutes per game in his career. Before he was injured, some NBA experts predicted he could be on his way to league defensive honors.
