This year’s New Orleans Saints’ record of 1-3 harkens memories of paper bags and “ain’ts” and the original Saints’ mascot named Gumbo. Before humans dressed in costumes with built it air conditioners and ran along the sidelines, goats and horses and cows represented teams. The Saints had a dog named Gumbo.

The original Gumbo, a Saint Bernard, met his adoring public and teammates in September 1967 a few days before the Saints’ first season opener as an NFL team. Al Hirt, the famous New Orleans trumpeter, serenaded the dog at a luncheon at the Jung Hotel. Gumbo was a gift from the Louisiana Restaurant Association and was named by Philip Wetzel in a contest.
Gumbo and Al Hirt, one of the original owners of the Saints, would hang out along the sidelines at Tulane Stadium during games. Gumbo’s descendants kept the franchise going until Gumbo IV was fired by the team in November 1985, according to the dog’s owners, Arthur C. Dale Jr. and his son, Larry (nola.com).

The original Saints mascot was a St. Bernard puppy, given to the team by the Louisiana Restaurant Association. “The New Orleans Saints have ended their search to fill one of their key positions,” reported The States-Item in July 1967, three months before the team’s first game. A 6-month-old, 75-pound male St. Bernard was purchased from a kennel in Colorado. Though no explanation was given for why that breed of dog was chosen, a contest was announced to name the new mascot. According to an Aug. 18, 1967 article in The States-Item, the winning name was selected from among 3,000 entries. The winner, Philip A. Wetzel Sr., received two season tickets for the Saints’ inaugural season.

The name feels childish and takes away from the seriousness of the sport. I think the team could have come up with something much better and more fitting for a professional football team.

It's a complete misstep in my opinion and makes me question the decisions of the organization. I hope they reconsider and choose a more respectful and dignified name for their mascot.
