NBA legend Earvin “Magic” Johnson is looking back on his life and career in the four-part documentary They Call Me Magic . In addition to revealing an April 22 premiere date, Apple TV+ debuted the first teaser for the series, which goes deep on one of the world’s most iconic sports figures.
According to the streaming platform and as seen in the first look, They Call Me Magic will offer a rare glimpse into Johnson’s world as he reflects on his impact, both on and off the court.
Thanks to unprecedented access, the docuseries directed by Rick Famuyiwa will chronicle the basketball player’s journey from his humble beginnings in Lansing, Michigan, to becoming the face of the Los Angeles Lakers to the revelation and fallout surrounding his HIV status to the activist, entrepreneur and legend he is today.
In addition to Johnson, who sits down for the documentary, the series will feature interviews with his family as well as an all-star lineup of figures from the sports and entertainment worlds.
In April 2020, the 62-year-old sports legend confirmed to ET that the docuseries was in the works, noting that it will focus on his basketball career as well as his family and business endeavors. "You get the basketball part of it, but then also how I reinvented myself and how I went into business and what I'm doing today, so it will all come into this documentary. I'm looking forward to it," he shared at the time .
The docuseries also comes as TV begins to revisit the heyday of the NBA in the 1980s and the rise of the Los Angeles Lakers. Most notably, Johnson’s story will be partly told in Adam McKay’s scripted HBO limited series, Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty , premiering in March.
Additionally, a nine-part docuseries helmed by Lakers owner Jeanie Buss and filmmaker Antoine Fuqua is coming to Hulu sometime in 2022.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Whether it was running a fast break on a basketball floor or a high-powered business meeting with influential CEOs, Earvin “Magic” Johnson is as smooth as they come.
Now fans are getting a behind-the-scenes view into the all-time NBA legend’s life story in brand-new docuseries “They Call Me Magic,” which premieres Friday on Apple TV+.
Viewers get unprecedented access into Johnson’s remarkable journey from his humble beginnings in Lansing, Michigan, to being the face of the Los Angeles Lakers and an all-time NBA legend.
The four-episode series also documents how the cultural icon changed the conversation around HIV and transformed into a successful entrepreneur and community activist.
We recently participated in a virtual press conference with Johnson. While it didn’t include his opinion on HBO’s excellent new sports drama television series “Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty,” the three-time NBA MVP winner did talk about his recent visit to Cleveland for the NBA All-Star Game and the real reason why he’s getting a kick out of watching “They Call Me Magic.”

Going back to your time growing up in Lansing, how did it shape you?
Lansing was everything. I wouldn’t be who I am today without it. I wouldn’t have achieved everything in life. I got my values living in Lansing. I got my education being in Lansing. I learned how to help other people while being in Lansing. It really shaped my whole life. I loved growing up there. I wouldn’t change anything that happened with me being raised and growing up in Lansing, Michigan. I still love going back there every chance I get.
How was your recent visit to Cleveland for the NBA All-Star game?
I enjoyed Cleveland. I’ll tell you, I had some meals there. The food was excellent. The people were outstanding but then they were very organized. The mayor and his team did an outstanding job of not only steering everybody but also getting everybody in and out of the venues. We were able to give back. I had an event with the mayor and Cleveland Cavaliers, as well as Commissioner (Adam) Silver. We did some great things in the community there. My time was excellent, and then to be with the top 75 all-time NBA players, oh, man, it was just like a big family reunion. We just loved seeing each other, being with each other and taking pictures. We also were pinching ourselves saying, “We can’t believe we’re one of the top 75 players, the best players of all-time in the NBA?” We were all amazed at the same time.
How did your faith sustain you through the challenging period following your HIV diagnosis?
Faith was everything. I always lean on my faith. God has truly blessed me to come through a lot of challenges in my life. Especially when I think about HIV, always being there for me and helping me make the right decisions when I need to make tough decisions. Also, just blessed me with the best wife a man could have in Cookie and our children and grandchildren. So I lean on my faith all of the time. I will never stop doing that, loving the Lord, loving God. I just thank him every day for everything that he’s blessed me with.
You continue to help people across the country. What are some of the highlights?
We continue to send young people to college. That’s a highlight. A lot of them are still in college today and doing well. I think about all of the different HIV and AIDS clinics we opened, all of the empowerment centers -- about 20 of them -- that opened in the poorest neighborhoods so they could have access to a computer. That’s very important. Also to my infrastructure company and what we’re doing building smart cities. During the pandemic, those kids in the Black and Brown community didn’t have access to the internet. Now we’re going to connect them and build broadband so they can be connected and do their homework. That’s very important. I’m excited about everything. There are so many things you’ll see a lot of that in the docuseries as well.
How did you make those legendary passes?
(Laughs) It’s a secret, shhh. I can’t tell everybody. No, I think it’s just I always wanted to make my teammates better. I cared about passing the ball more than I cared about scoring myself. And what I wanted to do was entertain the crowd all at the same time so I just had to perfect the no-look pass and set my teammates up for an easy shot. Now, I had to make sure I didn’t turn the ball over. I had to make sure it got to my teammates. I loved hearing the crowd. They’d go to the office the next day and say, “Can you believe what Magic did last night?” I’m going to tell you a real secret. I love watching the docuseries because I get to see myself play (laughs), but don’t tell anybody.
