There are some similarities to Trigun. The rival who has the same abilities, appearance, etc with opinions on capital punishment setting the two apart from each other.

Art work is pretty good quality. Clear transitions between sequences, strong outlines, good character/monster designs. The older female character designs are especially well designed typical of manhwa.

Only on chapter 15. I'll update when I get to the most recent release. Story is interesting so far. I hope it doesn't fall into every shounen trope. About the inspiration/imitation plagiarism in the story, seems to be heavily inspired by D. Grayman and Naruto.

I would give 10 only in around 4% of cases and this manhwa is one of them. It may be not original in some ways, but common it is impossible to have something which doesn't look like anything else, it is in human nature to find similarities. But what I like about this manhwa is that it is logical in some ways. If people or even organization can get an ally they will, no matter who that is, like witch hunters having witches in their ranks if those witches are not evil. If protagonist has someone who he values a lot, then he will even switch sides if it means that he can protect loved ones. and there are a lot of unexpected developments too, which makes it an interesting read all the time.

Problems with this series:

- The history drags on;
- The chapters were downsized from 60 pages to 13 (?!); *
- One of the "extra" characters got "author's pet" status for more than 40 (. ) chapters;
- The objectives / focus of all the characters seem to go back and forth all the time;
- Style over content (there is good content, but it is "trope heavy" and volatile);
- Everyone is "snarky" (well, thats a trope on Korean fiction, so. yeah);
- You will get tired of the same contrived smiles over and over again, even if they are well drawn.

EDIT:
* One kind soul explained to me that the chapter size changed because the translation group went from volume scans to magazine scans; seems that some chapter cliff-hangers don't actually exist on the "final product", too.

Even with a load of bad points, some concepts are pretty darn interesting (even if borrowed from other places) and well worth a look, for they end up being well developed. The main character is extremely likeable too, even if the same can't be said about his sideckick and even if he ends up getting less screen time than some uninteresting or even forcefully mysterious characters from the support cast.

tl;dr - This series is flawed, but extremely entertaining.

Alright so this was being printed in english as Witch Hunter and I bought each as they were published but then it suddenly stopped. Apparently they will begin a completely new printing under the name Witch Buster just curious if anyone knows the reason for the change. This series is absolutely amazing with all the right intense and hilarious moments to always keep you coming back. This reprinting is totally setting back my collection.

if you dont know or dont care manhwa is Korean manga and i gotta say there are many manhwa that rival and might be better that most manga and this is one of them. this manhwa has amazing art that still improves overtime, the story is really interesting and will keep you hooked and out of every thing the best things are the characters design and the fights. a lot of the main characters have a really unqiue design with a really funny personality trait, this manga really has to be one of the top (to me) in Korean manhwas. plus if you are interested in reading this please just read the first few chapters and dont listen to most of these comments, some of them can find an issue with anything (although im not saying any manga/manhwa is perfect) but this one deserves a chance as a manhwa of its own so people need to stop comparing it to other stuff

As the title says this has some decent art with some rather voluptuous drawn women. That's about it.

The plot well it's just so so. I mean it's understandable that the baddies are powerful i.e the bad witches. Although they are so ridiculously overpowered that the only way I see the good guys winning is how they've been winning so far. They let them win. Sure you get a low rung bug baddie that will get beaten but it takes almost the entire cast to beat that one bug of a bad guy. Yeah, yeah it's shounen and we can expect some out of left field insane power-ups, but still as it is now it's not clicking.

Also have to agree with the reviewer below. The author is extremely slow when telling his story. We had to painfully sit through how many chapters of the Yue clan charade? I think the author is buddies with The Breaker's author because he has the same story telling drag problem.

One of the best manga I've read. Awesome plot, nice art, good character building ^^. And I don't care about the plagarism thing. It's still a good -to-read manga.
It deserves a 10

Another great manga i have found and read. I think it's totally awesome except for one thing: why do korean artists always have to create female characters with such huge breasts, that's really annoying

What's original these days, anyway? Everything's been done, and Witch Hunter is no exception - it's unoriginal material at its best, though.

I genuinely enjoyed Witch Hunter. It has its laugh-out-loud moments, and I think the writing is excellent. It's reminiscent of the writing of Joss Whedon with its combination of drama, humor, and strong characters.

In fact, the characters might be the best thing about this series. Despite the fact that they're usually introduced humorously, the characters are always well-established and deal with drama with realistic gravity. We discover very quickly that they certainly aren't paragons of heroism. Many of them are selfish, but you don't dislike them for it. The characters aren't clear about their feelings or each other's; they lose their temper with each other and themselves - despite their strength, they become frustrated with their weakness in the face of crisis. I very much like these kind of developments. The plot itself may waver sometimes, but for the most part, it's solid thanks to the characters.

WH's greatest strength may be its greatest weakness, though. I personally don't see why you wouldn't like to see minor characters fleshed out. I certainly enjoyed the three brothers' story. But I guess that's the problem with WH - when audiences are motivated to pick up a series solely for its characters, audiences usually pick ONE character. And so when the plot moves away from that one character, you lose interest in the series until Tasha, I mean, that character comes back.

Manhwa / Witch Hunter

The surviving humans gather those with extraordinary powers into an organization dubbed 'Witch Hunter'. Aided by a Jack O Lantern-esque supporter, Tasha Godspell is one of the strongest Witch Hunters around. True to his moniker, The Magic Marksman, Tasha crushes Witches with devastating accuracy — yet he cannot come to hate them.

An ongoing manhwa written and illustrated by Jung-Man Cho. Witch Hunter is equal parts comedy, drama, action, and intrigue, fueled by Rule of Cool and a truly lovable Power Trio. Despite its epic scope, Witch Hunter favours character dynamics over politics; Tasha and his comrades (and enemies, and in-betweens) spend more screentime interacting than playing Mr. Exposition. Also: Every man is badass, every woman a Hot Librarian or Cute Witch, and awesome binds the universe together. You'll find little Angst here — unlike that other Asian graphic novel about hunting witches, Jung-Man Cho's title never takes itself too seriously.

The series has been licensed by Seven Seas Entertainment, which has released it with the title of Witch Buster in Ominbus format starting June 2012. And in an unusual move, the translated pages are also being released on a MWF schedule over at Zoom Comics .

Here's the character page. If you're looking for a trope about a type of character, it's The Witch Hunter.

Tasha Godspell is one of the most skilled witch hunters, known for his unique ability to use magic. He is on a mission to avenge his sister's death, who was killed by a powerful witch. The story follows Tasha as he goes on various missions to hunt down and eliminate witches.

Tropes:

  • Action Girl: All the Little Miss Badasses and then some. Witches fight via supporters, but Halloween , Bari and Elmar actually fight hands-on. And in chapter 52, D-Class Visul reveals she's actually a more competent fighter than an A-Class .
  • A Love to Dismember: Used as a joke in an omake. Two witches suspect Lancelot is a necrophile when Tasha's severed arm falls out of his cloak.
  • All Myths Are True: Let's see. We've got characters of Arthurian Legend running around, a Chinese dragon, the Greek Moirae, the Hindu goddesses Parvati and Prithvi, an old Korean kingdom in the sky, the Norse god Surtr and a few more references to Norse mythology with Cooga's emblem and attacks and, of course, witches.
  • All There in the Manual: Some volumes include character profiles, which detail everything about the featured characters from height and weight to the author's personal thoughts, as well as Q&A sections giving lots of information about the world and the WH organisation.
  • Almighty Janitor:
    • Visul is more powerful than a squad of elite assassins or a regular A-Class.
    • In an even more extreme example, Bari is merely Vihyungran's secretary. On paper. In practice, she's basically an S-Class WH all on her own.
    • Badass Boast:
      • Tarras. Even though he, Tasha, and Xing are all A Class WH, he constantly reminds them of his 'superiority'.
      • Everyone likes to boast in this series, and for good reason. It's just that the Doberg family apparently has a pathological need to do this.
      • Tasha wants none of Xing's friendly guidance. Cho intended Xing to play the role straight, but claimed it gave him an 'awkward, heavy air' and thus reworked his character.
      • As of Vol 7, Xing's played this trope straight at least once. His bro, Lee, seems to play the same role towards Lancelot.
      • Becoming a witch didn't do much good for Aria. She is torn between her wish of being with Tasha and the hard facts that what she has done and what she is make it impossible for her to return. It is implied that the corruption from magic power both initiates and prevents this, as the lack of mana resulted in Aria's old personality resurfacing, utterly broken and woobifying her. The exhilaration and mania coming from the power keeps the witches relatively sane. Kinda throws a different light on the witches being kept in Alcatraz.
      • The Tasha's Past arc reveals that, even before becoming a witch, Aria was already a Broken Bird due to being the sole survivor of a witch attack. Meeting and interacting with Tasha helped her heal, until Neptis's manipulations led to a succession of events that broke her all over again and pushed her to where she is in the present of the story. Getting rejected by your father figure, imprisoned in your house, sold to slavers under the pretense of sending you to a safer place in another country, watching your older brother figure get shot trying to save you, being made to realize that you destroyed your own town in your despair and then manipulated into consenting to be killed by your own father, all before getting your guilt and grief suppressed will probably do that to you.
      • Going hand in hand with the above situation, Tasha also experienced this. Before all that stuff went down, he was quite different from the money-obsessed jerk he is now. Aria's breaking directly leads to his own, as well as set the course for even more trauma.
      • Yue, Well, Xing got broke hard. He loved his people and yet within a year, someone was trying to kill him. He made peace with his assassin, and over two years were falling in love. and then she gets assassinated.
      • Only one of the reasons for the three-way Sibling Rivalry between Yue and his brothers. although 3 years later, Lee's got it scarily good.
      • Tasha's inability to measure up against some of the biggest obstacles that put themselves in his way (Varette, Lancelot, Ryuwhan, etc) continually frustrates him, leading him to desire power. It's also what leads him to unhesitatingly make a deal with Diana that most would balk at. Ironically, the stronger he gets and actually makes to catch up, the more he plays into the hands of North.
      • Inflicted to Visul in volume 11. (Yue just bypassed that and shed his coathimself.) Most anyone getting into a huge scuffle is going to take some whichever way you slice it, however, which is only natural given the tendency for massive amounts of destruction that the fights have.
      • It's notable that the WHs's uniforms actively try to avert it by using mana to repair itself whenever it takes damage, if the wearer can supply it.
      • That said, there are several members who do not quite fit with the usual standard. For example, Visul is listed as a D-Class, but is actually stronger than most A-Class. Three C-Class witches stationed in the north HQ actually have near A-Class combat abilities. Bari performs secretarial B for Vihyungran but can give most of the white class a run for their money. Tasha is classified as A-Rank but can temporarily boost his power to S-Class level, with his uniform recoloring itself to reflect the powerup; later on, his A-Rank designation becomes entirely nominal, having S-Class power naturally while remaining A-Rank on paper, to the point that using his power boost ability not only properly shows his actual power via said outfit recolor, the passive boost he provides to Halloween is big enough to make her power level promote to S-Class as well!
      • In Vol. 9, Halloween and Aria. An intentionally invoked example by the former to keep the latter occupied.
      • Any female WH getting to actually fight is almost always going to be this (since their most likely adversaries are Witches, which are all girls), but chapter 52 notably ends with Visul facing three witches.
      • Tarras and his Flower of Earth, full stop. Then we learn about his older sister and it seems the Technique has been passed down the DOBERG line for generations!
      • If a WH shows up to fight a Witch, you can count on there being a lot of collateral damage in the wake of the fight. Tasha and the Doberg duo, however, are especially prone to it.
      • Not even top-class WHs are exempt. Edea Florence once did this, in a display of overkill that puts nearly everything else seen so far to shame. See the aftermath here. The irony is that in this case and unlike previous examples, Edea did not mean to go so over the top. This person accidentally trumped the destruction of a fellow S Class who did it intentionally.
      • Vihyungrang can command the spirits of Earth and Fire, as well as more abstract concepts like "destruction", while Tarras and his sister can only do Earth.
      • Some of the strongest Witches also have these as trademarks. South seems to only be able to throw around fire and explosions, but that's all she needs. Both North and West are associated with cold. Edea (as well as West ) is infamous for spontaneously making it snow by her sheer magical presence.
      • Witches versus everyone else, not helped by the witches' most known characteristic of being Ax-Crazy.
      • Ryuhwan's entire hat. That guy hates witches. Ironically, he was trained by one, just like Tasha. His hatred for nearly all witches is because his teacher was killed by another witch, and since he doesn't know which one did it, he targets them all indiscriminately on the off-chance he gets the right one. His MO becomes less understandable once we learn that his master was West, making the list of possible culprits a lot smaller than you'd think.
      • Hot Witch: Whenever they aren't Cute Witches.
      • How We Got Here: Used often, the most mind breaking example being vol 5, which treated us to a sudden three-chapters long flashback and immediately followed by a flash-forward showing Tasha with his arm ripped off . Then vol 6 picked back up to before the flashback started, and the next three volumes or so show us the long way to getting Tasha in this predicament.
      • I Didn't Mean to Turn You On: Indirect. When Tarras comes up with a plan to get back at Tasha for all his abuse, Xing gets. really excited at the thought of Tasha getting furious at him. Tarras is creeped out.
      • Immortal Procreation Clause: Witches seem to be immortal unless killed, but Mana is too toxic for fetuses to survive. To curb their desires for children, they instead take on apprentices. This is to the point that some witches may turn right around and offer apprenticehood to fledgling witches whom they were just about to massacre.
      • Important Haircut: All three of the Bailong Princes (also a Close-Call Haircut in one case), which makes things interesting since they're triplets, initially only differentiated by their hairdos.
      • Impossibly Cool Clothes: The Witches' hats are absolutely ridiculous, and some of their getups are so impractical or complicated, it actually makes more sense when Aria shows that a Witch can actually summon her usual dress on at will.
      • Improbable Age: Black Class WH Tasha and his rival Cooga are only sixteen years old. Justified since: A) They are in a war of extinction against witches with horrendous level of mortality and B) They are among the most powerful humans alive, which means the organization or the human race wouldn't give a damn how young they might be.
      • Informed Ability:
        • Played with, due to No Export for You. Visul is revealed to be actually stronger than a Black Class in #52, which was a surprise to most readers. but actually it had been mentioned in the extra character file a few volumes in advance. However, she needed a Black Class to save her from two witches. which he does with almost embarrassing ease (though this was a case of her being matched against a Ditto Fighter and Honor Before Reason).
        • The Blackstar Brothers are A-class hunters. The only time they get to do some Kung Fu action they get utterly destroyed.
        • Visul calls Xing out on his uncanny attraction towards Tasha.
        • The witty banter and snark exchanged between characters ensures healthy amounts of this occurs during several conversations. For example, Tasha delights in mocking Tarras' very lackluster and unhelpful performance in the early chapters, an allusion to Tarras originally being conceptualized as an unnamed extra.
        • Played with when Ryu Hwan convinces his supporter that boasting a red horn will make him three times more powerful. Seems like JMC has heard of Char Aznable.
        • Within the WH, although there is no red, A-Classes wear black and are considered elites, while S-Classes wear white and are monstrously powerful, even compared to A-Classes; strong enough to stomp anything short of one of the Four Great Witches with ease.
        • Living MacGuffin: Tasha himself is a crucial part in the plans of North, East and Varette. Aria, Diana and Vihyungrang also each have their own special interest in him. Later chapters heavily imply that the reason for his importance is that he is the reincarnation of West.
        • Living Shadow - Varete, her supporterThe Abyss is just a shadow. She used it as she was Casting a Shadow. What really makes this stand out is that as long as there is a shadow, no matter how small or innocuous, it can be used as an extension of The Abyss. This is also why Varete wears long, flowing, multi-layered clothes: all those flaps and overlaps create plenty of shadows for The Abyss. And if all else fails, there is always the shadows of her hair under her hat.
        • MacGuffin Super-Person:
          • The Hero, Tasha Godspell, is revealed to be both the key to the Big Bad's plans for wiping out humanity, but also the key to stopping these plans and saving mankind. Exactly how this works has yet to be explained. There are also several other witches out to capture him, including his own sister.
          • North's plans and East's counter-plans both hinge on Tasha because he is the reincarnation of West, the revival of whom was stated by East to be at least half of North's goal.
Tasha (in his head)/Visul: It's like burning down the house just to catch a flea!
          • Kind of minor, but Bari is the name of a Korean goddess associated with death and shamans.
          • Prithvi is a Hindu god of the earth; guess which god the Doberg family reveres and receives their powers from.
          • Parvati is Hindu god Shiva's wife and also has three eyes; Monica's Supporter, which is also named Parvati, gives her a third eye, the Supporter has three eyes itself, and its abilities tend towards protection and support (Goddess Parvati stands for love and devotion).
          • The Bairong Triplets follow an astronomy naming scheme, as Lee (Sun), Yue (Moon) and Xing (Star).
          • The Empire of Bailong is based of medieval China.
          • Albion is entirely European, except for the plate armor.
          • Tasha and East meet in prison. Subverted in that East set that up. How is an enigma, though.
          • Monica gets to know Tasha through pick-pocketing.
          • Visul.
          • Most of the witches.
          • Halloween wears a tube jacket that bares her midriff, a good amount of her shoulders, super-tight minishorts and Zettai Ryouiki to finish it off. Whenever she isn't giving Tasha an eyeful, of course.
Tasha: "Monica. ! . and others."
          • The only thing that seems capable of deeply affecting Words is a good wine.
          • A flashback reveals that North, for all her composure, can get fired up about something if the topic is particularly important to her. Like getting into a spat with West over how to handle the humans hunting witches.
          • Tasha takes Tarras down a peg by mentioning he barely did anything until Volume Two.
          • Tarras is also called out on the fact that he was just intended to be an extra by Xiao and Myun, which leads him to suspect the author of spreading lies.
          • Parvati insults Amos by calling him an extra.
          • Witches in general, as fully mastering their powers causes them to suddenly look younger and stops their aging. (Didn't happen to Monica and Aria because they aren't full-fledged master witches yet.)
          • In order to have been trained in the same fighting style and accrue enough experience to shame Tasha, with enough time for him to be an unknown initially, Ryuwhan is naturally older than he looks. He's sixty seven (67) years-old.
          • Merlin looks like a young woman, but he is Reall Y Seven Hundred Years Old.
          • Person of Mass Destruction: Everyone.
          • Physical God: The Four Great Witches have been shown to be way beyond mortal comprehension in power, being armies unto themselves. Hell, East possesses Surtr, king of the Jötunn, Primordial of all living flames and deicide extraordinary as her supporter. A giant infamous for being prophesied to set the whole world on fire.
          • Power Limiter:
            • Tasha and Ryuwhan, most prominently, although each of theirs is different. Both have in common two things: it triggers a release of large amounts of mana, thus greatly empowering them, and changes their hair color. Ryuwhan displayed his first. It turns his hair white. The release of mana increases his power and allows him to manifest an arsenal of various mana guns to assault his enemies with. His control over them is great, which means he can barrage his opponents from multiple angles with a ton of powerful attacks at once. Compared to Tasha's, it offers less power but allows greater complexity and coverage. Tasha's goes in the opposite direction. It gives him massive amounts of mana, far more than Ryuwhan, which means his attacks are freakishly strong. As in, landscape-altering strong. The boost is enough to temporarily boot him up to S-Class, with his uniform changing to white to match, and turns his hair to its original color for the duration. It more or less puts him in the level of Edea Florence, minus the control over his power. This means he can summon a gigantic Battlefield and causes it to snow (which drains the mana of his opponents). It has only been used once, however, probably because the rush of mana is too much for Tasha to handle.
            • The Halloweens have their own limiters in the form of their seals, which take the form of lock pendants, two for each. Each seal released restores a lot of battle potential, but also removes some of the restraining impulses of the Golden Contract on the Halloweens, meaning they can be more inclined to turn on their masters. Releasing the final seal unleashes the full power of the Supporter, but severs the contract between master and supporter; it's anyone's guess what the former supporter will then do.
            • Taras (Id), Tasha (Ego), Xing (Superego).
            • Big Ego (Xing), Bigger Ego (Tasha) and Biggest Ego (Tarras).
            • The witches in general, North in particular. The ones in Bailong even hide it a little behind their huge sleeves.
            • Tasha himself when high on mana.
            • We're told the exact age, which is rather rare: Merlin is 586 years old.
            • Several witches are much Older Than They Look, but the ones that are incomparably old are the Four Great Witches.
            • All the high-ranking WH have official aliases relating to their special ability.
            • The Four Great Witches, aside from having their own sobriquets, also have their own names as this, since no indication is ever given about them having a "real" name. We assure you that any title they have will pale in comparison to the horror caused by being confronted with any of the four cardinals.
            • Royally Screwed Up: The Bailong triplets have problems. The real kicker is that if not for outside interference, they probably could have patched up their problems on their own.
            • Royals Who Actually Do Something: Halloween , a.k.a. Princess Mordred. Plus, the royal family of Bailong Empire is raised to be badass.
            • Serious Business:
              • Cooga is more concerned with the fact Tasha shot through an earflap of his hat than the fact he was aiming for his face. Also, Tarras will turn on his teammates in the middle of a fight if his greatness is insulted.
              • Tasha will jump into a river to retrieve chump change. In fact, Tasha hates giving up his possessions so much that he will do anything, up to and including quitting the WH and making himself a ton of enemies , to avoid doing so. Considering his past, it makes sense.
              • Xing, Lee and Yue hilariously reference Dragonball in a yonkoma .
              • The Tasha Truman Show .
              • Objection!
              • Until the first three profile pages were scanlated, most of the English fandom misspelled Tasha's surname, Tarras' first name, and Xing's full name.
              • Often the result of the translators not getting mythological and/or cultural references. For instance, the Doberg family worships an Earth deity which has been referred to as "Fribity" in the French publication and "Prevhiti" in English scanlations. It just might actually be the Hindu goddess Prithvi. Aria's supporter is known as "Isis" (as in the Egyptian goddess) or "Aegis" (some sort of weapon/shield in Greek mythology), with the latter making more sense. (It should be noted that translating names from Korean isn't as easy as it looks. though apparently that doesn't explain how Prithvi was translated into Fribity.)
              • Strongly hinted at between Visul and Xing, that is, Yue. She's actually an absurdly good fighter and only stays a D-Class so that she can keep an eye on him. Chapter 52 shows she'll go to great lengths to keep Yue's secret, and chapter 54 shows she ruthlessly killed a dozen men to save Lee solely because Yue wanted Lee to survive.
              • Ametyn. Not only she took Virsul's attacks directly without getting a single scratch and brought her down with one finger, but even Calia, South's direct underling who crushed Cooga during Camelot invasion, is wary of her . Even so she deems an absolute honor to be called Lee's servant and she is quite jealousof her position.
              • Does Tasha give up Halloween and train under Merlin or get arrested for disobeying an order ? Neither, he quits the WH .
              • Does Yue resign himself to become the next Emperor of Bailong or fight his father to stop the coronation? Nope, he convinces Xing to do a Twin Switch with him so he can live freely like he always wanted. Unfortunately, this one ends quite badly for nearly everyone.
              • Tasha and Edea's relationship was close enough that one would figure this was the case. Both had very strong feelings that teetered between platonic and romantic from the dialogue alone.
              • By all accounts, Ryuwhan shared a similar relationship with his late master, Great Witch West.
              • The Bailong princes Lee, Yue and Xing are Sun, Moon and Star, respectively.
              • The Four Great Witches are named after the cardinal directions: North, East, South and West.
              • Seems to be the Dobergs' modus operandi. Tasha and Visul have both compared their fighting method to "burning down the house to catch a flea".
              • Edea nukes an A-Class witch, leaving a crater as wide as a castle in the earth that looks likes bottomless, with Warz mentioning that there is no situation where an S-Class like her would need to do that. She was that pissed off.
Xing : I wouldn't dare to leave this world before I killed you with my own hands, Yue. Tasha : I will quit WH .

My name is East, I'm one of the 4 Great Witches, and starting from today I'll be a witch hunter, so, please, take care of me!

              • Because witches have to suppress their emotions in order to fight efficiently, few truly understand love or even care for it at all. In the backstory, those who don't suppress them tend to meet unfortunate ends against their emotionless sisters.
              • Edea Florence removed her emotion stabilizer to experience the overwhelming feelings that were being suppressed. While this made her experience love for Tasha, it really comes back to bite her in the ass.
"So. this was how Aria was feeling. This ecstasy. AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
              • The Worf Effect: A staple of this series, which is used to show the fact of the matter is that none of the main characters, or even supporting characters are anywhere close to being the best of the best and that there are countless threats out there way more powerful then them.
              • World of Badass: Going hand in hand with World of Ham, especially when Tarras and Tania are around.
              • Yandere:
                • Wai halo thar, Aria! Though this is later revealed to be a mix of getting high on mana and Varete's manipulation. She's still violently jealous over his attention, however. Visul just might be a lighter case in regards to Yue, though thus far she hasn't killed any nice guy.
                • Ametyn is obsessed with Lee, and is willing to kill even her own fellow witches for and over him.

Review – Witch Hunter manhwa Vol. 1-2

Anime Reporter prepares for the Halloween season with a look at Witch Hunter, (aka Witch Buster), Jung-man Cho’s manhwa series. What’s a manhwa you ask? (Or possibly didn’t, I don’t know.) “Manhwa” is the Korean word for comic and is generally used to describe any form of comic from South Korea. These are often quite similar in style to Japanese manga, though not exclusively.

Witch Hunter is set in a world ravaged by witches, women of incredible arcane power who are often corrupted by the forces they wield. Tasha Godspell, our teenaged protagonist, is a member of WH, (you guessed it: Witch Hunter), an organisation devoted to protecting humanity from those witches waging war against them. Tasha is a likeable enough young lad and a more than capable hunter in his own right. Known as the Magic Bullet Marksman, Tasha specialises in using a variety of guns with different effects powered by his own mana energy. Quite helpful in equipping and carrying these guns is his Dimensional Gallery Pouch, which can store an ungodly amount of guns inside a nifty little space(It’s bigger on the inside). While Tasha is a skilled fighter and seems to know right from wrong, there’s very little that motivates him besides money, something which many of his comrades don’t look too fondly on.

Among his comrades is the fantastically gothic Halloween, a possessed Jack O’ Lantern puppet and one hell of a swordfighter. Halloween serves as Tasha’s supporter, similar to a witch’s familiar, something which is apparently quite unusual for non-witches within the story.

The first two volumes of Witch Hunter set up the premise pretty neatly, with more than a little funny banter and cartoonish bickering between Tasha and Halloween and a great quantity of imaginative and large scale showdowns between WH members and a few of those pesky witches that seem to enjoy murdering everyone so much. Volume 01 in particular establishes some of Tasha’s history and hints at some of his relationships without giving too much away. It soon becomes clear that, aside from his duty as a Witch Hunter, Tasha feels no hatred towards witches in general, making his job a complicated one. As things progress we’re introduced to two more of WH’s finest young fighters; Xing Bairong, the lighting fast melee fighter and Tarras Doberg, who can channel the power of earth. While these two don’t share Tasha’s greed, they’re far from flawless, often tripping over their own egos when they’re not trying to trip each other.

(Witches, as you can see, seem to come in two distinctly different styles in this series; conservative in the style of clothing worn and… well, conservative in the amount of clothing worn.)

The plot is well paced, moving along quickly, gathering up questions as things move along and providing just enough answers to keep things interesting. Characters are well designed both in terms of appearance and personality and the humour between characters is easily one of the highlights so far. While further reading might be required to judge is Witch Hunter will go down as a classic series, the first two volumes, sold in English as a single book, are certainly a tremendous start.

Witch Hunter Volumes 01-02 are currently available in English, French and Korean, as are a great deal more of the volumes. Anime Reporter will be bringing you more feedback on each pair of volumes along the way, but if you’re looking for a series with imagination, action and humour, this certainly seems like a good place to start.

                1. John - 2 stars
I found "Witch Hunter Korean" to be quite disappointing. The story was poorly developed and didn't make much sense. The characters were one-dimensional and lacked depth. The acting also left much to be desired. Overall, the movie felt like a cheap knock-off of better supernatural action films. I wouldn't recommend it.
                2. Sarah - 2.5 stars
I had high hopes for "Witch Hunter Korean," but unfortunately, it fell short. The CGI effects were subpar and took away from the overall viewing experience. Additionally, the plot was predictable and lacked originality. The pacing was also off, making it difficult to stay engaged. I was left feeling underwhelmed by the film and wouldn't watch it again.
                3. Michael - 1 star
"Witch Hunter Korean" was a waste of my time. The dialogue was cheesy and the acting was cringe-worthy. The action scenes were poorly choreographed, leaving no room for excitement or suspense. The story lacked depth and failed to engage me as a viewer. I regret watching this film and would advise others to steer clear of it.
