Current State of Amulet Rolls and Proposed Changes

I doubt this is the first time someone has proposed this, but I think this issue is worth discussing again. I've made a post in the PTR Feedback to hopefully get some traction and discussion on the topic.

Currently, there are about 20 amulets in game that have one or more pre-determined rolls. I believe most, if not all of the amulets were designed to be this way before legendary gems were introduced, but they need to be updated to fit the current meta now. Currently for most players, the best stats for an amulet would be: Main Stat/Elemental Dmg, Crit Chance, Crit Dmg, and a Socket. However, several of these pre-determined rolls make getting the desired stats extremely difficult for certain amulets. And considering that some amulets are considerably rarer than others, it makes the search for a useful/perfect one even harder. Luckily, an ancient amulet/ring is not much better than a normal one or the problem would be much worse.

I'd like to propose that the pre-determined stats that are undesirable be changed to something better (like a socket) or removed entirely to give a better chance to get the ideal stats. I would consider the undesirable stats to be: Attack Speed, Cooldown Reduction, Movement Speed, Spirit Regen, and Vitality. We need to see a change in these pre-determined rolls to fit with the game in its current state.

The most positive change I've seen regarding this topic is modifying Sunwuko's Shines from rolling Attack Speed to a Socket (currently the only amulet that rolls with one and was done after the introduction of legendary gems) and it has made it considerably easier to get a good Shine by today's standards. The inherent socket does not guarantee to get a good Shine as my fellow monk players know, but it is easier to find a usable one.

It would be a huge positive step to apply the pre-determined socket onto more amulets, especially some of rarer items like the immunity amulets where it's currently harder to get an ideal one because of the forced stats. It's extremely disheartening to get an unbelievably rare item like the Star of Azkaranth and have it roll like trash because it's guaranteed to have CDR. At the very least, Tal Rasha's Allegiance should also have a socket since it is a set amulet like the Shines.

In the PTR, we've seen other items adopting the pre-determined socket like the Focus and Restraint rings and whether that is intentional or not, I believe it's a change that would greatly benefit players. The same principle should be applied to rare rings like the SoJ and possibly some other rings coming with the new patch. I think it would be an overreach to apply this to all rings/amulets, but instead maybe have a general rule that rarer an item is, it should have a slightly better chance to be usable and a forced socket would help with that.

Below, I've organized the amulets to show what rolls are currently pre-determined to demonstrate the scale of the issue. The more asterisks(*) an amulet has, the rarer it is.

Attack Speed:

  • Countess Julia's Cameo*
  • Moonlight Ward*
  • Xephirian Amulet**

Critical Hit Chance:

  • Blackthorne's Duncraig Cross
  • Haunt of Vaxo*
  • Mara's Kaleidoscope**
  • Ouroboros

Critical Hit Damage:

  • Moonlight Ward*
  • Squirt's Necklace
  • Tal Rasha's Allegiance
  • The Traveler's Pledge

Cooldown Reduction:

  • Dovu Energy Trap*
  • Ess of Johan*
  • Flavor of Time
  • Halycon's Ascent
  • Overwhelming Desire
  • The Star of Azkaranth***

Elemental Damage:

  • Holy Beacon (% Holy)
  • Moonlight Ward* (% Arcane)
  • Eye of Etlich (% Elemental)

Movement Speed:

Socket:

Spirit Regen:

Vitality:

  • Ancestor's Grace**
  • Tal Rasha's Allegiance

TL;DR Some amulets have terrible pre-determined rolls which is likely because they were designed before legendary gems became a thing. Having an inherent socket (like the Sunwuko's Shines) on rarer items like the immunity amulets would help make it easier to get a usable one unlike how it is now where it's actually harder. Maybe this principle should be applied to rare rings as well.

Edit: Some of you are focusing on desirable vs undesirable way too much. I would assume that with the introduction of legendary gems, nearly all the stats would not be as good as a socket which is what I'm suggesting being the primary pre-determined roll for rarer items. If a socket is generally more desirable than the other stats, then it would allow more flexibility when re-rolling to get the stats you want and even possibly change down the road for another build whereas having to re-roll for a socket would not allow for that flexibility. Or, the amulets should roll truly random stats so every build/class has a fair shake at getting something that works for them.
