Curse of the Dragon Slayer is an exciting adventure film set in medieval times. The story follows the journey of a young girl named Alora who is on a mission to save her kingdom from the wrath of an evil dragon. Alora is played by Danielle Chuchran who delivers a strong performance as a fearless warrior determined to protect her people.

The film opens with Alora's village getting attacked by the vicious dragon. Her father, the king, has been murdered by the dragon, and Alora sets out on a journey of revenge. She teams up with a group of knights who are also on a quest to slay the dragon. The group consists of diverse characters - a dwarf, an elf, a wizard, and a warrior - all of whom bring unique skills to the table.

As the group sets out on their journey, they encounter various obstacles and challenges. They face dangerous creatures, treacherous terrain, and numerous other threats. The film builds up the tension effectively, and the action scenes are well-choreographed, keeping the audience engaged throughout.

One of the highlights of the film is the setting - the medieval world is beautifully recreated, and the attention to detail is evident. The costumes, sets, and props all contribute to creating a world that is immersive and believable.

The character development in the film is also commendable. As the group faces challenges and obstacles, their relationships with each other evolve, and their strengths and weaknesses are exposed. Alora, in particular, goes through a transformation as she learns to become a leader who can inspire and guide her team.

The film also explores themes like bravery, sacrifice, and loyalty, which are all integral to the plot. The script is well-written, and the dialogue is engaging, keeping the audience invested in the story.

The performances by the lead actors are solid. Danielle Chuchran delivers a standout performance as Alora, portraying her character's vulnerability and strength with equal conviction. Richard McWilliams, who plays the knight Crom, also delivers a notable performance, bringing depth to his character.

Paul D. Hunt, who plays the dwarf character, adds some much-needed humor to the film, bringing levity to some of the darker moments. The other actors in the supporting roles also deliver good performances, adding to the overall quality of the film.

Overall, Curse of the Dragon Slayer is an enjoyable adventure film that will appeal to fans of the fantasy genre. The film has a solid plot, engaging characters, and stunning visuals, making it a must-watch for anyone who enjoys a good adventure movie.

Curse of the dragon slayer online

If you read my most recent mini-review of the short film "Honorbound," you already know how I feel about crossover genres, especially dark fantasy. There is an obvious reason why horror websites such as Fangoria, Dread Central, and Bloody Disgusting will often have articles and promotions about sci-fi and fantasy films. (for instance, Dread Central just posted an article about the dark science fiction anime Akira.) All speculative fiction is so often tied closely together. They often deal with closely knit themes of darkness, humanity, sin, punishment, and redemption. How do we deal with our own inner demons? How do we face the darkness of the unknown? What demonic forces lie just beyond the veil? All of these types of questions are answered--or at least addressed--in all of speculative fiction. I, as a writer, love writing works of both horror and dark fantasy. With the release of my most recently finished project and book, Office Horrors, I get the chance to start working on a new Gothic fantasy novel. Although the settings are vastly different between the two novels, the character development and themes are very similar. The joy of speculative fiction is, well, just that--speculating about what we would choose to do as humans if specific dark events occurred.

Well, this week I was on my Netflix and came across this dark fantasy adventure film: Curse of the Dragon Slayer (also known as Saga: Curse of the Shadow). Thinking that the movie was going to be just sub-par I decided to put it on while I did some chores. Well, I am happy to say that I didn't get very much house work done during that time. I quickly became engaged in this independent, low budget work of dark fantasy. I was very impressed and pleasantly surprised.

The movie opens with the elf assassin and bounty hunter, Nemyt Akaia, as she is hunting down her most recent bounty. Her target rides a dragon which she shoots out of the sky. The dark rider, upon hitting the ground, pursues Nemyt. The two fight to the death. Nemyt cuts off the dark rider's head with a glorious and bloody spray. Unfortunately by killing him she becomes infected by a dark curse.

She takes the head into town to collect her bounty and now realizes she is considered a criminal because of her curse. It seems that anyone cursed with the brand of the The Shadow--a secret cult--eventually becomes a slave to the dark forces, possessed by demons and forced to do The Shadow's demonic bidding. The Shadow is trying to possess as many "followers" as possible so they can raise the demonic elder god Goth Azul who will destroy the world. (Does this type of plot sound familiar yet? Demonic possession, raising demonic legions, summoning evil elder gods, etc. If we made it gorier and more vulgar we could pass it off as an Evil Dead or Army of Darkness clone.)

Nemyt is thrown in jail. A cleric named Keltus comes in and takes her into his custody. He thinks he might use her as his pawn in scheme to stop Goth Azul from awakening and devouring the earth. She has a strong will and is therefore resisting the possession of the curse upon her. She is against going with Keltus at first but agrees to go with him when he claims that he can cure her after she helps him.

They are soon also joined by a renegade orc--Kullimon--who has been kicked out of his clan. Nemyt hates all orcs and has to resist with all her might from killing him. The group sets off to stop the ceremony from happening while fighting off the forces of The Shadow as well as the orc horde. They must collect blood from a bleeding relic before The Shadow does. They are interrupted by a horde of the possessed undead demons who they have to fight off.

The story continues along similar lines for the rest of the movie--Nemyt is captured by the horde at one point and is threatened with rape and torture. More party members are marked with the curse and are forced to fight off turning into demons of The Shadow. The final scene with the ceremony feels like something out of one of H.P. Lovecraft's novellas. All these elements build together in a dark adventure that is enjoyable to watch.

I was very suprised with the quality of this movie. Yes, it is a B-movie. It hearkens back to the dark fantasy/barbaric films of the 80s such as Deathstalker and Dragonslayer. As a fan of both horror films and fantasy films from the 80s I found this to be very exciting and engaging. For a film in this type of genre and budget it does well in all areas. The script and dialogue are well written and engaging. I think the only exception may be the very end with its trite final scene. (Come one, really? Did we have to give it a happy sappy ending?) But the actors do fairly well in their roles. There was the occasional dropped line from Nemyt but it was forgivable because her action sequences were so great.

The special effects and make-up were fairly good. The dragon and demon CGI both look fairly impressive for a film of this merit, although still not 100% like a big budget film would be. Also, there manages to be a decent amount of violence and gore. Blood sprays as characters are beheaded or throats are slit. Some of the sequences end up being a little over the top and cheesy but not horrible enough to take away from the overall immersion of the film.

Upon slaying a dragon, players become cursed with a mark that gradually corrupts their character. This curse manifests in various ways, such as decreasing their stats or affecting their abilities. To combat the curse, players must embark on challenging quests and seek out powerful artifacts scattered across the game world.

Summing it Up

This is a great little indie film. It isn't for everyone but it is a stand out effort when compared to many of the low budget attempts at horror and dark fantasy among indie filmmakers. This is a B-rated dark fantasy film and therefore will evidently have its cheesy moments. But they are never horrible enough to detract from the overall spirit of the movie. There is plenty of action and gore--and a decent enough story--to make this movie enjoyable for a summer afternoon watch.
