Las nuevas aplicaciones y redes sociales últimamente se han marcado por el contenido audiovisual acompañado de canciones que en oportunidades llegan a un gran nivel de masificación. Gracias a eso durante 2021 el grupo estadounidense, Surf Curse, pudo observar el nuevo pulso que alcanzó su sencillo «Freaks» a través de las olas de TikTok.
Conociéndose desde la escuela, y con un intento fallido de conformar una banda a temprana edad con una amistad en común, Nick Rattigan (batería, voz) y Jacob Rubeck (guitarra, voz) se reencuentran en época universitaria para formalmente crear un proyecto musical con el nombre inicial de Buffalo 66, pero que es reemplazado por el originalmente conocido Surf Curse a costa de una sitcom de los años 70. Desde este primer hecho se da a entender el recursos muy utilizado de la banda por contener antiguas películas y series como referencias principales para nombres de canciones y la creación de sus líricas.
El momento de alta resonancia de «Freaks» es inesperado y tardío pero comprensible debido a la alineación de la canción. A pesar de ser entrenada en su primer álbum de 2013, la canción se regeneró de popularidad tanto dentro como fuera de la conocida red social, aumentando millonariamente sus reproducciones en las demás plataformas.
El revuelo de Surf Curse con el éxito de esta canción ha significado desde el año pasado un acuerdo con Atlantic Records, importante sello de Estado Unidos, y el lanzamiento del video musical de «Freaks »que, anterior a ser fenómeno popular, no estaba contemplado. Todo en medio de una plenitud por la que transita la escena del post punk, garaje rock y surf rock que ha ido resurgiendo tanto en la industria anglo como también en Latinoamérica.
«Buds» como primer estrenado independiente de larga duración de la banda oriunda de Nevada, acentúa las bases de sonido y temáticas con resaca melancólica que tratan la mayoría de sus canciones. Las pistas dentro de álbum son interpretaciones algo oscuras distintivas del post punk y sintonizadas desde lo más orgánico que pueden crear una guitarra, una batería y las voces de Rattigan y Ruberck con muy poca sobreproducción.
En 2015 Surf Curse, que hasta ahí seguía conformándose por la pareja de amigos inicial, presenta el EP de «Sad Boys» como muestra que elimina aquellos sonidos de “garaje” con que notoriamente se habían percibido sus canciones dentro de la esencia underground, dando un salto hacia sonidos más claro, voces percibidas por el frente de los instrumentos y en compañía de guitarras más melódicas. Desde este punto, las presentaciones en vivo se complementaban en escena con otros guitarristas hasta que Noah Kholl y Henry Dillon se unieron como miembros oficiales a la agrupación musical.
Una puesta en escena que además obtiene peculiaridad en comparación a otras bandas al ser Rattigan el baterista pero al mismo tiempo el vocalista principal.
Los cambios en el camino musical del grupo se vio intensificado durante todo el segundo y tercer álbum de estudio, ya para el cuarto estreno, los originarios de Nevada se mudan a Los Ángeles conllevando consigo un cambio de esencia de su última entrega que se desprende del lado punk y se acentúa más hacia el indie rock, o sobre la música alternativa popular desde el año 2019.
Es a lo que se debe que «Heaven Surrouds You » se consagre como una propuesta de canciones más lentas, alternando canciones como «Disco», mucho más fácil de comprender y recordar debido a los sonidos más digeribles y adquiridos, al parecer, por directa influencia del proyecto solista de Nick Rattigan, Current Joys.
A la fecha estamos a puertas de un nuevo álbum con el Surf Curse planea montarse en una gira por Estados Unidos y Europa, pasando además por el festival de Corona Capital Music en Ciudad de México. «Magic Hour» llegaría el próximo 16 de septiembre para descubrir que es lo que planean presentar estos chicos luego de varios años dentro de un silencio musical.
