Lupercalian pagan celebration was an ancient Roman festival held on February 15th. It was a fertility celebration dedicated to the Roman god Lupercus, the god of shepherds and protector of the Romans. The festival involved various rituals and customs. The main ritual of the celebration involved the Luperci, a group of priests, running through the streets of Rome while wearing nothing but a goatskin loincloth. They carried a whip called a februlum and would playfully strike people they encountered along the way. It was believed that these strikes would bring fertility and ward off evil spirits.
