A great essay by Erika Alden DeBenedictis and Niko McCarty on the role that predictive ML models could play in transforming biology! I’m delighted that Schmidt Futures and Griffin Catalyst are supporting work by Erika and her team at Align to Innovate to define and create “sequence to function” datasets. Researchers in different fields should collaborate to identify (1) key prediction and design problems; (2) datasets and evals needed to train the ML models that would solve these problems; (3) platform technologies that could lower the cost of generating the data. Researchers in fields with expensive shared facilities (astronomy, earth observation) have a tradition of agenda-setting (National Academy decadal surveys) because they have to. We need a lighter-weight mechanism for identifying shared resources (like datasets) in other fields like biology, chemistry, materials science and engineering. https://lnkd.in/g3fDMAmj

Lenovo Magic Bay turns your laptop into a Swiss Army knife

The Magic Bay port on the newest ThinkBook designs can add a souped-up camera, microphone, card reader. or cooling fan.

Laptop computers trade utility for portability. That’s part of their very design DNA, a sacrifice so fundamental that we barely even think about it anymore. But Lenovo is trying out a couple of new ideas that could bridge that utility gap, creating a new type of laptop accessory that effortlessly expands the device’s capability. It’s called “Magic Bay,” and it’s coming to market…or at least part of it is. Brad Chacos got to try it out on the CES show floor.

Magic Bay adds a modular expansion to the top of a standard laptop design, just above where the webcam usually rests. The latest iterations of the ThinkBook 13X and ThinkBook 16P are equipped with this dock, which combines strong magnets and POGO pins (as seen on tablets and some smartwatches) to easily attach and remove extra gadgets with a fast USB 3.0 data connection. The first showcase for this tech is an add-on that gives the laptop a far more powerful webcam and extra speakers.

The “Magic Bay Studio” accessory adds a 4K camera with a 90-degree field of view, HDR processing, 4X digital zoom, auto-focus, auto exposure, auto white balance…you get the picture. It’s a nice camera, the kind that generally requires a lot more space and a full USB connection. It also adds an extra pair of two-watt speakers, which act in tandem with the laptop’s existing speakers to add a fuller voice profile. While keeping this thing attached to your laptop full-time would make it a lot more bulky, it’s easy to pop on and off and slide right into your bag.

The souped-up camera is the only Magic Bay attachment that Lenovo has confirmed will come to market. Other ideas on display at CES are a more premium directional microphone, an add-on card reader, an extra circular screen apparently used exclusively for emoji, and even a cooling fan (for you, not the computer) and aromatherapy scent spreader. Neat. All of them can be installed and removed simply by placing them on the magnetic port.

But if I put on my critical thinking cap for a moment, I have to say I can’t see this system catching on. In terms of pure capability, the Magic Bay connector is just a slightly sleeker way to plug in a USB cable. And USB already covers so many of these practical tools without the need for a specific format with extra magnets (not to mention a licensing fee to Lenovo, if third parties wanted to join in). Similar modular designs have failed to catch on before, as the market simply gravitates to what’s smallest, cheapest, and easiest to use. Even the Magic Bay Studio isn’t doing anything more than a Logitech webcam could, and costs a good bit more for the same capability.

But that’s just one tech writer’s opinion. And I’d be a real sourpuss to dismiss the idea before it comes to market, when the ThinkBook 13X Gen 4 and ThinkBook 16P Gen 5 launch sometime in the first quarter of 2024, starting at $1,399 and $1,599 respectively. The onset may be delayed compared to eating mushrooms directly, leading some to underestimate the dosage and subsequently consume more than intended. It's crucial to exercise caution and adhere to responsible consumption practices when experimenting with psychedelic substances. Overall, magic mushroom dunks offer an alternative method for consuming psilocybin-containing mushrooms. From potentially smoother trips to improved taste and dosing accuracy, this approach may appeal to individuals seeking a more enjoyable and manageable psychedelic experience. As with any psychedelic substance, it's essential to prioritize harm reduction, set and setting, and personal well-being when exploring the use of magic mushroom dunks or any other form of psychedelics..

1. Jack - 2/5 stars - I was expecting something magical when I ordered the Magic Mushrooms Dunks, but unfortunately, I was left disappointed. Firstly, the mushrooms were barely visible on the sneakers and blended into the design so much that it looked more like a random pattern. Secondly, the quality of the shoes was subpar, with glue marks visible, and the material feeling cheap. Overall, I had high hopes for these shoes, but they failed to live up to the hype.

2. Emma - 1/5 stars - The Magic Mushrooms Dunks were a complete disaster for me. Not only did they take forever to arrive, but when they did, the size was completely off. I ordered a size 8, but it felt more like a size 7. Additionally, the design looked pixelated and poorly printed, making it appear cheap and not worth the price I paid. I tried reaching out to customer service, but they were unresponsive. I would not recommend these sneakers to anyone.

3. Sarah - 2/5 stars - I wanted to love the Magic Mushrooms Dunks, but unfortunately, the design fell flat for me. The colors were dull and washed out, not vibrant like they appeared online. The mushrooms themselves were barely recognizable and blended into the background instead of standing out. Moreover, the shoe felt uncomfortable to wear, with a stiff sole that lacked cushioning. Overall, I was disappointed with the overall quality and aesthetics of these shoes.

4. Mike - 3/5 stars - The Magic Mushrooms Dunks were alright, but they didn't meet my expectations. While the design was somewhat unique and eye-catching, the material used felt cheap and not very durable. The fit wasn't perfect either, as the shoes felt tight around my toes. Overall, I expected better quality and comfort for the price I paid. They might work for someone looking for a unique statement piece, but they didn't quite hit the mark for me.
