The Role of Mascots in University Identity: Ole Miss Case Study

By admin

Ole Miss Official Mascot The University of Mississippi, often referred to as Ole Miss, has an official mascot that is beloved by students and fans alike. The official mascot is the Rebel Black Bear, which was introduced in 2010. Before the Rebel Black Bear, the university had a controversial history with its previous mascot, Colonel Reb. Colonel Reb was a caricature of a southern plantation owner, and many people felt that the mascot represented a painful part of Mississippi's past. In response to these concerns, the university decided to retire Colonel Reb and search for a new mascot that would be more inclusive and representative of the Ole Miss community. After a public vote, the Rebel Black Bear was selected as the official mascot.

After a public vote, the Rebel Black Bear was selected as the official mascot. The Rebel Black Bear represents the active wildlife population in Mississippi and carries a positive connotation for Ole Miss. The university also wanted a mascot that would encourage environmental awareness and conservation efforts.

It looks really good!

Co-Presented with Eric Chien.

Nearly 16 months in development, three redesigns and reworkings, dozens of optimization and improvement tests.

We are going to release what is perhaps the ultimate version of Signed Coin to Glass-- Portal.

Wow. I mean, from an ingenuity standpoint, this is truly incredible.

The main considerations to me are:
1) As noted on the KS preview page, it does make a a bit of noise for about a second apparently.

2)As noted on the KS preview page, Suspicious evidence "marks" on the close up pad could be a thing

3) With something as sophisticated as this, how will the electronics hold up?

4) Price! $299 backer price + $70 shipping (then it goes to retail for $450 + ship). though I suppose I've spent more on smaller, less sophisticated items!

5) Not sure but you most likely are limited to the provided glasses (or at least the shot glass)?

Tough call as being in on this first saves you quite a bit of $$$. but it seems like a risky/ambitious project. Indeed, it may be a bit over engineered for my needs. I may instead give another consideration to a more low tech option like Roller Coaster.

Still, this looks quite amazing, no question about it.

All good points. Looks cool but not really practical for the real world given most people perform strolling.

There are far better and more entertaining coin routines out there that don't require a big chunky board to perform or carry around. That's a lot of money for a suspicious looking prop in this day and age.

I agree but the effect is very, very impressive, especially for those of us who lack the chops to do that stuff without gimmicks. I'm tempted but very concerned about an artificial-looking prop.

I'm sure it's a nice mat that can be used for other card/coin routines. And it does look amazing. However since they say:

"Due to the extremely limited interior space and strict control of how thin the pad can be, more than 40 components had to be carefully designed to fit efficiently.

This is probably the most complicated close-up pad to date.

From the idea conception to the final production, it took nearly 16 months, three redesigns and reworkings, and dozens of optimization and improvement tests.

Due to the complex structure and high precision requirements, even at the mass production stage, more than 50% of the construction and assembly processes need to be completed individually by hand."

I too would be very concerned about how long the mechanics and electronics will last and whether it is at all repairable. How long before you end up with a $400 mat? And with a non-foldable, somewhat delicate mat, you have a close-up effect that almost needs to be performed as a parlor effect unless you have some very favorable conditions.

This item was on sale late 2020 or early 2021 in China for a while, all I can see is a lot of complains about the noises, then this product got taken down from the shelf and. reappear here.

Virtually the same as N-Pad in which I stated that you may have noise issues as these are obviously mechanical in working.

My friend have it and shown me last month. I found the mechanic running noise is so big that you cannot perform it close up.
Especially that coin drop sound you can hear it over 10 feet!!

Sharpace are you referring to N-pad or portal?

Is it just me or does the N-Pad look a bit like someone framed a door mat? The TCC thing looks way better. Its not for me, but it looks like a fun thing to play with, and knowing the TCC guys it will no doubt be well made.

N-Pad looks like a carpet tile to me. But it seems more versatile than Portal since it is claimed to work with cards, keys, and rings as well as coins. Also the N-Pad trailer suggests there are multiple portals - though that may just be careful video editing.

The main question for me, however, with both pads, is about noise - especially at vanish and in transit. I’d like that answered clearly.

Yes I thought exactly the same. Lol.

So, they already released it last year and it is on kickstarter now?

Too bad that it looks good, but doesn't "sound" good.

They missed badly with quality control on the Deluxe Linking Rings by Michael Ammar. Read the forum, it was hit or miss on linking rings. Whats the chance of getting something like this right. Your not dealing with Collectors Workshop here.

I’ve liked all my TCC stuff to date but agree this is too much of a gamble. Not to mention the $70 shipping fee.

Ole miss officisl mascot

Since its introduction, the Rebel Black Bear has become a beloved symbol among students, alumni, and fans. The mascot can be seen at sporting events, parades, and other university events, bringing school spirit and pride to all who encounter it. In addition to the official Rebel Black Bear mascot, Ole Miss also has secondary mascots that include Tony the Landshark and a costumed interpretation of the Rebel Black Bear. These mascots further enhance the school spirit and fan engagement at university events. Overall, the official Ole Miss mascot, the Rebel Black Bear, represents a positive change at the university and brings joy and excitement to the campus community. It symbolizes inclusivity, environmental awareness, and school pride, making it a cherished symbol among the Ole Miss family..

Reviews for "From Rebel Black Bear to Landshark Tony: Ole Miss Mascot Rebranding"

1. Jenna - 2 stars - Although I understand that traditions are important, I found the Ole Miss official mascot to be outdated and offensive. The concept of having a human dressed in a Confederate soldier uniform represents a painful and divisive period in American history. It sends a wrong message and alienates a large portion of the student body and the wider community. It's time for Ole Miss to reevaluate their choice of mascot and opt for something that promotes unity and inclusivity.
2. Mark - 1 star - As a person of color attending Ole Miss, I am deeply disappointed with the official mascot. It is disheartening to see the university uphold a symbol that is associated with Confederate imagery and racism. It perpetuates a negative stereotype and fails to create an environment of acceptance and equality. It's high time for Ole Miss to listen to the concerns of its diverse student body and choose a mascot that represents the values of inclusivity and progress.
3. Sarah - 3 stars - While I can appreciate the historical significance behind the Ole Miss official mascot, I believe it is time for a change. The symbol of a Confederate soldier is a remnant of a divisive era, and it no longer reflects the diverse and inclusive nature of our campus. It would be more appropriate to choose a mascot that unifies the student body and embodies the values of equality and progress. Let's embrace the opportunity for positive change and move away from symbols that perpetuate division.
