Snooky Serna: No time for retirement!

Snooky Serna in the middle wearing black and the cast of “Maple Leaf Dreams” Starring LA Santos and Kira Balinger directed by Benedict Mique. This is under Lonewolf Films PH in cooperation with JRB Creative Production and Star Magic

She’s now 57 years old, and has spent five decades of her life in the world of show business, but for Snooky Serna it seems like she has no time for retirement! Because at the moment, she is into a new movie that seems to be challenging enough for her not to accept.

It is entitled “Maple Leaf Dream,” starring LA Santos and Kira Balinger with Joey Marquez, Tirso Cruz 111, Jong Cuenco, Malou Crisologo, Jef Gaitan, Kanisha Santos, Hannah Vito and Luke Alford. Directed by Benedict Miguel, this is under Lone Wolf Films PH in cooperation with JRB Creative Production and Star Magic. The movie is currently under production.

According to Snooky, “Maple Leaf Dream” is a family drama focusing on the ups and downs of having to work abroad. In this special guest performance, she plays the character of Mayette, a loving and devoted mother.

I remember Snooky (Maria Milagros Sumayao Serna) as a young girl, being the daughter of my good friend Mila Ocampo and her husband Spanish-Filipino Von Serna. Snooky started acting at age four, via her landmark debut in “Wanted: Perfect Mother” in 1970 where she captured the hearts of viewers as “a cute, sweet and smart talking kid.”

In that same year, Snooky earned her first acting nomination from FAMAS Awards as “Best Child Performer” for the film “My Little Angel.”

Trained by acclaimed director and National Artist Lino Brocka, Snooky won her first FAMAS Award as Best Child Actress in 1972 for the film “Sana Mahalin Mo Ako.”

In 1980, Regal Films tapped Snooky to play the lead role in “Katorse” but since she wasn’t ready then to play mature roles, the role went to Dina Bonnevie which made her a big star.

Snooky was launched as one of the original Regal Babies in her teens. In the early 80s, she starred in “Underage,” “Schoolgirls,” “Story of Three Loves,” and “Anak ni Waray vs. Anak ni Biday.” But later, she starred in daring films like “Bata Pa Si Sabel” (1981), “Strangers in Paradise” (1983), “Experience” (1984), “Teenage Marriage” (1984), “Zuma” and “Lilac” (1985).

In 1986, Snooky was cast in the lead role for the IBC 13 TV series “Mansyon.” In the same year, she was given her first solo film, an adaptation of comic book serial “Blusang Itim” which was a box-office success. She also hosted the TV shows “Always Snooky” and Regal Drama Presents Snooky” on ABS-CBN.

She also starred in movies which earned nominations from award-giving bodies. She was also in “Kapag Napagod Ang Puso” with Christopher de Leon and “Inagaw Mo Ang Lahat sa Akin,” Harvest Home official Philippine entry to the 1995 Oscars.

Snooky was dubbed as the “Brooke Shields of the Philippines,” “Queen of Fantasy Movies” (because of the phenomenal success of her trilogy movie “Rosa Mistica”) and “The Eternal Star.”

She bagged two international awards: the Jury Award for Best Performance and Best Actress Award at the 11th International Film Festival in Manhattan New York. It was said that she is so far the only Filipino actor to win to major awards in the said film festival.

It was via “Koronang Itim” that Snooky finally won the FAMAS Best Actress Award and also from the Cebu Archdiocese Media Awards.

She had a remarkable showbiz career, but did you know that there was a time that Spooky almost quit the entertainment world because of intrigues? It was her late mom Mila Ocampo who encouraged her to be strong and not mind the bashers, and to just focus and concentrate on her craft.

Snooky, who is seen mostly on GMA and ABS-CBN shows, is also known for her antagonist (kontrabida) roles since she played Mercedes dela Paz in “My Faithful Husband” (2015). In the current GMA series “Underage,” she plays Velda, wife of a congressman played by Christian Vasquez.

In addition to her acting career, Snooky is also a member of the corporate world, being AVP for Megaworld Properties, Inc.

As to her personal life, Snooky has two daughters, Samantha and Sachi, from her marriage to Ricardo Cepeda which lasted for 12 years. Her second husband was Nino Mendoza, artist and vocalist of the Filipino rock band Blue Jean Junkies.

Her mom was a Catholic, but Snooky joined Iglesia Ni Cristo (INC) after reportedly being healed of illness, and was part of the bio-epic movie “Felix Manalo” which had Dennis Trillio in the male lead role. Other stars who are fellow INC members include Jaclyn Jose and Gladys Reyes.
