One thing I want to get out of the way that won’t necessarily change how I view the show but does kind of ruin my feelings about it. Bandai Namco decided to “decanonize” Suletta and Miorine’s marriage probably to be marketable in more areas. But one of the things I was prepared to praise them for in this review was the fact that they were willing to go all in on the Yuri themes they kept alluding to. Giving the copout response that they wanted us to come to our own conclusions and make of the ending what we wanted was really disappointing to me. I still think the show was great but endings are important to me and this ruined it a little bit for me.
If this is your first Mobile Suit Gundam series I have to give you a little disclaimer. The endings are not usually this happy, I can think of maybe one other series in this franchise that has a “happy” ending. I don’t want that to dissuade you because this is a fantastic series and one of my favorites but that is just something to keep in mind.
From a technical standpoint, this anime was fantastic and absolutely beautiful. The character models are realistic but just weird enough to give it that Sunrise Studios flavor. As for the voice cast I feel they knocked it out of the park, minor controversy aside. Jill Harris was the perfect pick to voice Suletta. She nails that social awkwardness really well and while I might not have liked the thought of her casting at first she turned me around really fast.
Natalie Van Sistine plays her opposite in Miorine and she might be one of my favorite new voice actors. When I say new I mean more new to me, the first thing I heard her in was Full Dive: This Ultimate Next-Gen Full Dive RPG Is Even Shittier than Real Life! and I wasn’t super impressed. The story was honestly pretty convoluted and I don’t quite understand it. I like how it tries to show that corporations and corporate greed can be just as devastating as corrupt politicians banging the war drum. It was a social commentary that I thought was really interesting and a story worth telling. The problem is that the second half of the series went down a really confusing route.
Look, we usually watch these shows for giant robot fights and those were solid. The characters were enjoyable and the story was just fascinating enough to keep me interested. This was a really fun series I just wish it was longer. With this being the first full Gundam series since Mobile Suite Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans I expected more but it was still a lot of fun and you better believe I am going to buy the model kits.
