Exploring the World of Applied Magic in Novels

By admin

An applied magical novel is a genre of literature that combines elements of real-life situations or events with magical or supernatural elements. In this type of novel, the author applies magical or fantastical elements to explore complex themes and ideas, adding a layer of enchantment to the story. The main idea of an applied magical novel is to create a bridge between the real world and the realm of fantasy or magic. By blending the ordinary with the extraordinary, these novels offer a unique perspective on human experiences. They often examine human emotions, relationships, and societal issues through the lens of magic, allowing readers to explore and understand these aspects in a new and imaginative way. In an applied magical novel, the magical elements are not just used for entertainment or escapism, but to delve into deeper meanings and symbolism.

Regarding the Morninglord/Mother Night split, I think it kinda makes more sense to make it Ravenia/Baba Lysaga more than Barov/Ravenia. Barov was a scumbag, if you look at what he did with the dusk elves under Rahadin's entry. (The dusk elf displacement/genocide didn't start with Strahd. )

The Lesser Evil wrote Regarding the Morninglord Mother Night split, I think it kinda makes more sense to make it Ravenia Baba Lysaga more than Barov Ravenia. The trauma experienced by the remainder of the state religion after the wedding and the slaughter of it s leadership in attendance led to a schism in the church, with the Ravenkin rejecting Mother Night as the cause of this calamity, which in itself was a seismic event, as the Ravenkin believed the Raven Queen to be their creator, and worshiping only Andral.

In an applied magical novel, the magical elements are not just used for entertainment or escapism, but to delve into deeper meanings and symbolism. They can represent metaphors, symbolize inner struggles, or highlight the beauty and mystery of the world. Through these magical elements, the author can provide a fresh perspective on familiar themes and challenge conventional ways of thinking.

Therianthropy

The most famous example being the lycanthropes or "werewolves", the disease family known as therianthropy causes the inflicted to shift from humanoid form into an animal form under certain conditions. Most strains have two types of victims: those born with it and those who were infected later in life. The "natural" therianthropes are able to control their shifting and could infect others. Many natural were-beings are feared as a direct result of werewolves and their violent habits. The infected or inflicted therianthropes are typically forcibly shifted when a particular event happens, such as a full moon for a werewolf, but some versions do have similar levels of control to the natural ones (practice time being the only true barrier).

Transmission & Vectors

Blood and spit of someone born with the condition are the usual vectors, but magicians have long mastered replicating the process used to make one so curses manifesting as the disease are common enough.

Causes

The exact beginnings of the disease are debated. Some cite sources saying it was a curse put on a person who shamed the gods with just as many claiming it to be a gift. Generally, the idea of it having been both with a combination of other things is considered the truth.

Symptoms

An "allergy" to silver, healing so quickly from non-silvered non magical damage that it essentially never occurred, slight altering of personality in infected, and (of course) an ability to shift (completely and partly) into an animal without a spell.

Treatment

A creature born with the disease cannot be healed of it completely, but any wealthy or connected enough victim can have a mage create or find an amulet that cancels out the worst of the symptoms.

Applied magical novel

One of the key features of an applied magical novel is the seamless integration of magic into the narrative. The author creates a world where magic is an integral part of the characters' lives, and it is accepted as a normal part of their reality. This allows the readers to suspend their disbelief and fully immerse themselves in the story. Furthermore, applied magical novels often explore the consequences and implications of magic in the real world. They question the ethical and moral dilemmas that arise when magical powers are present, and they examine the impact of magic on individuals and society as a whole. These novels can serve as allegories or commentaries on various aspects of the human condition, such as power, desire, and the balance between good and evil. In summary, an applied magical novel is a genre that blends real-life scenarios with magical or supernatural elements. By incorporating magic into the narrative, these novels offer a fresh and imaginative exploration of human experiences and themes. They provide a unique perspective on familiar subjects, while also posing thought-provoking questions about the nature of magic and its impact on individuals and society..

I really wanted to like "Applied magical novel", but I just couldn't get into it. The writing was overly descriptive and filled with unnecessary details, which made it difficult for me to stay engaged. The plot was also predictable and lacked originality, making it feel like a rehash of other fantasy novels I've read before. Additionally, the characters felt one-dimensional and lacked any real development. Overall, I was left feeling unimpressed and underwhelmed by this book.
