Review: Sea Witch by Sarah Henning

Synopsis: Everyone knows what happens in the end. A mermaid, a prince, a true love’s kiss. But before that young siren’s tale, there were three friends. One feared, one royal, and one already dead.

Ever since her best friend, Anna, drowned, Evie has been an outcast in her small fishing town. A freak. A curse. A witch.

A girl with an uncanny resemblance to Anna appears offshore and, though the girl denies it, Evie is convinced that her best friend actually survived. That her own magic wasn’t so powerless after all. And, as the two girls catch the eyes—and hearts—of two charming princes, Evie believes that she might finally have a chance at her own happily ever after.

But her new friend has secrets of her own. She can’t stay in Havnestad, or on two legs unless Evie finds a way to help her. Now Evie will do anything to save her friend’s humanity, along with her prince’s heart—harnessing the power of her magic, her ocean, and her love until she discovers, too late, the truth of her bargain.

“The sea is a fickle witch. She is just as likely to bestow a kiss as to steal the breath from your lips.”

Review: You should know that I love a good fairy tale retelling. This is one of those books.

Almost all of us have read or know about The Little Mermaid. This is a story of Ursula, one of my favorite fairytale villain. The beginning of the book was exciting and I was quickly drawn into it. However, it sets a slow pace, and I kept wondering when the twist would come. After combing through almost two-thirds of the book, the plot twists came. I was disappointed because I felt deprived of something.

The story is set in 19th century Denmark, and I loved reading about a bit of Danish history and culture. The Danes, especially under King Christian IV, put many “witches” to death in the 16th and 17th centuries. Here, the author beautifully weaves this fear of witches on land with the tale of the sea witch.

The author tells us the story of three unlikely childhood friends: Nik (the prince), Anna (deceased) and Evie (the half-Italian fisherman’s daughter). One day, Nik almost drowns but is rescued by a mermaid who looks like his -supposedly deceased -friend Anna. Evie finds the mermaid on land and learns that her name is Annemette. Evie is shocked by the mermaid’s resemblance to her friend and soon befriends her.

Nik is a perfect Disney prince-adorable, gallant and romantic. I loved Evie for she was so unlike the villain I had known (until now).

This is a unique take on The Little Mermaid, and I liked it. It will not thrill you nor will you find romance in the book. Nevertheless, I think some readers will definitely love it as I did.

Verdict: This one gets 4 out of 5 stars from me.
