The horror genre often goes through trends where big budget, and indie films, get stuck in a rut and we see a surplus of films released that follow similar stories or situations. Lately, we have seen more paranormal flicks than I care to count along with a metric shit ton of torture porn flicks. Some of these can be fun but for the most part they end up being recycled garbage.

After I watched Lords of Salem last year I realized that we do not have near enough flicks involving witchcraft and voodoo. A few months back I received a press release for House of the Witchdoctor which was said to star Bill Moseley. I was excited to see how this film was handled and if Moseley was in it for more than just a cameo. I reached out to them and they were kind enough to send me a screener.

**Spoiler Alert** The film follows a man who was just released from prison as he and his friend head out to get fucked up and do a little fucking. His first night out he rapes a drug dealer’s woman before killing her and the drug dealer. The following day they head out for more havoc and cross paths with a group of college students as they travel to the parents of one of the young girls. They try to force themselves on the college girls while their boyfriends watch but a police enters the room and they disband.

The group goes on to their destination while the young girl’s parents leave for the night. The two men head out into the woods looking to get fucked up again and find the car the group of college kids were driving and decide to break in for a little co-ed ass. The two break in and tie up the men before raping the women. They force themselves on two of the women while the third hides out in the basement until her parents arrive. However, once they arrive things don’t fair so well for the two gentlemen. The man and woman of the house is harboring a dark secret and a mystical power that will make them think twice before breaking into another home for a good time.**Spoiler Alert**

This was a film that I was extremely excited to see. It had Bill Moseley, Brad from Night of the Creeps, and a fucking witchdoctor. However, when I started watching the film I quickly realized it was nothing like what I thought it would be. In fact, the film was nothing like I hoped it would be.

The acting in this one is fucking top notch by the entire cast but I want to personally recognize Allan Kayser and his performance. He really made the film what it is and without him the film would not be as good as it was. After seeing him as Brad in Night of the Creeps and Bubba in Mama’s Family I have to say he pulled a 180 and gave us a completely different character than what we are used to seeing him do. The story for this one is strong but wasn’t quite what I was expecting the film was more home invasion that it was a flick involving voodoo. The home invasion portion of the film was truly disturbing but the post artwork made me think I would see more of the sack-head character and that really let me down. However, this House of 1000 Corpses meets Home Alone story was fun just not what I was expecting.

Finally, the film has a slew of on screen special effects. Sadly, they are not that gory until the very end of the film and even then we don’t really get enough that one would expect when looking at artwork above. Overall, House of the Witchdoctor is one truly unnerving film that is filled with rape, voodoo, blood, and drugs. It is definitely worth a watch.

Aww, I Didn’t Get to F*ck Her

I heard about Devon Mikolas’ film House of the Witchdoctor last year, while attending Crypticon in Kansas City, spotting promotional material for it, meeting Allan Kayser and Bill Moseley, and becoming great friends with one of the film’s executive producers, Chazz Demoss. A full year had passed and I still had not seen the film. Crypticon came again, I got to meet another star of the film, Leslie Easterbrook, and chat it up with Chazz and Allan one more time. They held a special screening of House, but sadly I missed it. There was a buzz around the convention about it… and dammit, I had to see it.

When it got its official release date, I ordered it from Amazon and waited patiently for it to arrive. When it came, I was so eager to watch it I almost wanted to skip work, lock myself in my room, and pretend I was a kid staying up late for Monstervision.

This movie kind of takes you by storm; I was not expecting what I got at all. Allan Kayser is known for his frat boy role in Night of the Creeps or his fantastically silly role on Mama’s Family, but take what you know about him and throw it out the window because he kills it in this film with his portrayal of Cliff Rifton, who is sort of the worst of the worst — a rapist, murderer, drug-abusing satan-worshipper. I think it’s safe to say he got to have the most fun in this film showing a range in his character from predator to prey and it is too much fun to watch.

When Cliff is released from prison, he is far from rehabilitated and immediately seeks out his old partner in crime, Buzz, played maniacally by David Willis. Together, the two get right back into the swing of things, taking drugs, raping, and murdering. They happen to set their sights on a group of friends heading out to an isolated house for a weekend of fun.

This film is pure carnage, rough and violent like the video nasties of the 80’s with enough humor to keep you separated from the depravity. I thought this film was fantastic, it gives you what you want and maybe even a little more than you bargained for. We get Bill Moseley and Leslie Easterbrook bringing their A game, as well, trust me.

If you’re a fan of films like The Devil’s Rejects, I Spit on Your Grave, or House of the Devil, this one is for you! I personally give it 4 lines of coke out of 5.

‘House of the Witchdoctor’ Fails to Achieve It’s Desired Effect

As horror fans it’s sometimes hard to differentiate “good “ horror from “bad” horror. It’s not just scares, or gore FX or characterization, especially when the movie in question veers into exploitation territory. Devotees of the genre enjoy the blood and seek to be disturbed. Movies like Last House on the Left, Texas Chain Saw Massacre, or I Spit on Your Grave thrive on elements of the forbidden. It’s possible that in twenty or thirty years House of the Witchdoctor will be an acknowledged classic but it’s hard to view the movie as anything other than distasteful.

Let’s get through the synopsis: A man runs through the woods and is killed by burlap sack-hooded people. One year later, the man’s one-time girlfriend returns to her parents (played by horror icons Bill Moseley and Leslie Easterbrook) place in the country accompanied by her two friends and their boyfriends. Meanwhile, a recently released convict and his pal go on a rampage, following the kids to the secluded house. But not all there is as it seems (no spoilers but the title and the fact that Leslie’s father is a doctor should give you an idea of what’s going on).

The good news is all three lead actresses are very likable and charming and it is easy to imagine them going on to very successful careers. The bad and worse news is that we must suffer through prolonged rape scenes for two of them and another for a side character. If you need a barometer of how the director thinks, look no further than the scene where the main heroine breaks down crying in the shower over her lost love and the camera slowly pans down to focus on her naked torso. Gratuitous nudity is always an appreciated part of the genre, but this isn’t provocative, stimulating or boundary-pushing, just gross.

In assessing why this movie fails where other movies, like Martyrs, work, we must look to several things. Does it achieve it’s desired effect? The movie disturbs, not because of empathy with the characters but because of empathy with the actresses.

What is the philosophy behind this movie? All the attacks seem to be power fantasies for the villains in which we are invited to partake. The movie never seems to be on the side of the women as they are abused repeatedly and it feels like we are supposed to enjoy it. What was the point? To scare? That is hard to believe. Horror and comedy are the two things people think it is easy to do, but some fans should remain onlookers.

Note: One splat of blood for the actresses and one for Bill Moseley and Leslie Easterbrook getting paychecks.
