I never believed in magic until the day I got hitched to a witch in 1942. It all started when I met her at a local cafe. Her name was Eliza, and she had an air of mystery about her. From the moment we locked eyes, I knew there was something different about her. Little did I know, she was a witch. Our courtship was unusual, to say the least.
For a film thats eighty years old, the practical effects haven't aged badly at all and what I feel is a part of the charm of the film. Its too bad we didn't get a new, upgraded release for its eightieth anniversary last year.
Just like Dirty Dancing with Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey, Veronica Lake and Fredric March s personal troubles with each other didn t seem to really leak into the film at all. Our courtship was unusual, to say the least. Eliza had the ability to foresee the future, and she would often tell me things that hadn't happened yet. At first, I was skeptical, but her predictions always came true.

I was surprised to see that no thread for this film existed on here, so I thought I'd make the thread myself.
I watched it first on the Criterion Channel in September and then the blu-ray last month. It makes a perfect film for the last months of the year, October through December. I'd love for this to get a new and even better restoration. There were times the print looked rough and the audio not as good as it should be. Nevertheless, I am glad that Criterion considered this film worthy enough to be in the collection. Its a cute little comfort film everyone should see at least once.

I MARRIED A WITCH is one of the funniest, most charming comedies ever to come out of Hollywood. Wonderful film.

Its a shame this is the only film they did together and didn't like each other because they had great chemistry in this.

This year does make it a decade since the Criterion release! I wish I had discovered it earlier than last year. Though I can say that for a lot of things I watched last year.

On the page for the release, at the bottom under forum discussions, it says "No related forum discussions for I Married a Witch yet." Since it said that, I assumed no one made one for the film after all this time, so I made the thread today.

People in NY has a chance to watch it on the big screen this month at MoMa.
It even appears to be a new digital restoration by the LoC and the Film Foundation. Interestingly, MoMa also states it is screened courtesy of the American Genre Film Archive (AGFA).
Quote:As is the case with many independent productions, the original elements of I Married a Witch took a serious beating as the film passed from distributor to distributor, and for this restoration the National Audio-Visual Conservation Center of the Library of Congress digitally combined three sources to recover the film’s striking visual quality. |

An excellent movie. But I've always thought it would have been even better with Joel McCrea and Paulette Goddard in the leads. These two were in peak form in the early 40's and were practically born to play these roles.

It was originally supposed to be Joel McCrea, but he pulled out because he had had enough of Lake after Sullivans Travels.

Yes, I'd heard that. He'd have probably been happy to do it opposite Goddard.
With her delicious cracked-ice voice, mischievous sense of fun and all-round sexiness she'd have been a bewitching dream in the part.

I bought it because I love Bewitched and thought this was partially the idea behind the TV series.
I also love Mr. Peabody and the Mermaid kind of an early Splash.

When I saw the tweet about it, I hope it meant good news in terms of a new restoration coming out in (the possible near) future.
And this is just a little fun fact (not having anything to do with the restoration), but Grandmama Addams from the original Addams Family television show, who was played by Marie Blake aka Bossom Rock, played the small part of Jonathan Wooley's fiance at the beginning of the film. Talk about hilarious in hindsight given what kind of character she'd play in the future.

It was as if she had some kind of supernatural power. When Eliza finally revealed her true identity as a witch, I was both shocked and intrigued. She explained that she had been born with magic in her bloodline and had been practicing her craft since she was a child. I was fascinated by her powers and wanted to learn more about the world of witchcraft. As our relationship deepened, Eliza taught me about the different aspects of magic. We would spend hours in her cozy cottage, surrounded by shelves filled with dusty spell books and ancient artifacts. She would teach me the incantations and rituals, and together we would perform spells. It was a magical experience, unlike anything I had ever imagined. However, being married to a witch was not without its challenges. People in our small town were suspicious of Eliza, and rumors began to spread. They called her a charlatan and accused her of dark magic. It was heartbreaking to see the woman I loved being shunned by our community. But despite the challenges, our love prevailed. Eliza's magic brought joy and wonder into my life, and I couldn't imagine being with anyone else. She taught me to embrace the unknown and to see the beauty in the mysterious. Our love story with a witch was not conventional, but it was filled with magic and adventure. Together, we defied the odds and created our own happily ever after. I learned that love knows no bounds and that sometimes the most extraordinary things happen when we least expect them. Getting hitched to a witch in 1942 was the best decision I ever made, and I wouldn't trade my magical life for anything else..
Reviews for "A Love Beyond the Ordinary: My Marriage to a Witch in 1942"
1. Sarah - 2 stars
I found "I got hitched to a witch 1942" to be quite disappointing. The plot was flimsy and predictable, with no surprises or twists. The characters lacked depth and development, making it difficult to connect with them or care about their fate. The dialogue felt forced and unnatural, making it hard to stay engaged. Overall, I was underwhelmed by this film and would not recommend it.
2. David - 1 star
"I got hitched to a witch 1942" was a complete waste of my time. The acting was atrocious, and the special effects were laughable. The storyline was confusing and poorly executed, leaving me bored and frustrated throughout. The humor fell flat, and the attempts at romance were cheesy and unconvincing. Save yourself the trouble and skip this movie altogether.
3. Emma - 2 stars
I had high hopes for "I got hitched to a witch 1942," but unfortunately, it fell short of my expectations. The pacing was inconsistent, with sluggish moments dragging on and action-packed scenes feeling rushed. The plot lacked coherence and left many loose ends unresolved. Additionally, the chemistry between the lead actors was lacking, making the romantic storyline difficult to invest in. Overall, this film failed to captivate me and left me feeling unsatisfied.
