Dejected but are still keeping hopes alive: Bhopal’s LGBTQ+ community on SC verdict

By Alisha Ali
Bhopal: Tuesday’s dawn came with a glimmer of hope for 23-year-old Amarjeet Verma. His eyes were fixed on the TV screen for Supreme Court ’s verdict on same-sex marriages. Like many others in Bhopal and the country, he also seeks marriage equality in India.
However, the initial euphoria quickly turned into disappointment for the LGBTQIA+ community as the special bench of the SC didn’t grant legal recognition to same-sex marriages. Everything feels the same to him now. “Dukh is baat ka hai ki hume ek normal jeevan jeene k liye bhi permission chahiye (It is sad that we have to take permission to lead a normal life). Initially I was hopeful, but ultimately same-sex marriage has not been legalized and it feels like the fight was for nothing. But our fight remains, especially for those living in small towns,” says Verma.
He was not alone. Anger, dejection, shock and hope — these emotions were felt across the queer community in Bhopal. When the decision came, the Bhopal queer group started buzzing with messages. “I memorized today as the date of legalization of same-sex marriage, now I am trying to forget it,” wrote one member. “Apne haq ki Ladaai bohot lambi chalne wali hai (The fight for our rights is going to last a very long time), another member posted on the group.

For Amarjeet’s fellow community members, striking down regulation restricting queer and unmarried couples from adoption wasn’t enough. “Before adopting a child, I would want to marry my partner but that right has not been given to us,” says the 23-year-old Harshit, who lives with his 28-year-old partner and wishes to marry him someday.
Payal and Yashvika Batra, who tied the knot last year, were hoping to remarry if the same-sex marriage was legalised. But all their hopes are dashed. “For any parent, their child’s happiness is the most important thing. We accepted Yashu as our daughter-in-law and will support them both if they want to adopt,” says Payal’s mother. Preeti Bavisa, whose younger brother is openly gay, says a favourable verdict would have paved an easier way for the community in the future. “We live in a joint family and acceptance is difficult in such a case.” However, she will keep supporting her brother.

Not just queer people but allies also came in support. “I felt like there was a sense of passing the buck of responsibility as the decision-making has now been vested with the Parliament. But some decisions like protection against offenders who oppose or discriminate queer couple, right to privacy, taking home loans, living together as a union and adopting individually are a step towards betterment,” says the 21-year-old ally, Bhavya Manchanda.

This collaboration between two beloved franchises is sure to excite both MTG and D&D fans alike. Another upcoming set is "Innistrad: Midnight Hunt." As the name suggests, this set takes place in the gothic horror-inspired plane of Innistrad. Players will encounter werewolves, vampires, and other creatures of the night as they navigate through the dark and treacherous landscape. This set promises to deliver a spooky and atmospheric gameplay experience. Additionally, "Strixhaven: School of Mages" is another set to look forward to. Set in the magical university of Strixhaven, players will take on the role of aspiring mages, attending classes and learning powerful spells. This set introduces five distinct colleges, each representing a different mana color, and players can align themselves with a college based on their gameplay preferences. Lastly, "Kaldheim" is an upcoming set inspired by Norse mythology. Players will explore the snowy and rugged plane of Kaldheim, where gods, giants, and mighty warriors clash in epic battles. This set introduces unique mechanics such as "boast," which allows players to activate powerful abilities on their creatures during combat. In conclusion, MTG continues to excite players with its upcoming sets. Reviews for "Discover the Power of Magic: A Preview of the Upcoming Sets"

- Karen - 1 star - I was really disappointed with the upcoming Magic sets. The themes were unoriginal and felt recycled from previous sets. The card designs were lackluster and didn't provide any new and exciting gameplay mechanics. Overall, it felt like a cash grab by the company rather than a genuine attempt to innovate. I hope they step up their game in the future.
- Michael - 2 stars - I've been a long-time Magic player, but I can't say I'm excited about the upcoming sets. The artwork and flavor of the cards felt uninspired and uninspiring. It's a shame because Magic has always been known for its rich and immersive world-building, but these sets fell flat. The lack of new and interesting mechanics also made the gameplay feel stale. I hope the next sets bring back the magic that made Magic great.
- Emily - 2 stars - I was really looking forward to the upcoming Magic sets, but unfortunately, they didn't live up to my expectations. The power level of the cards felt all over the place, making it difficult to build balanced and enjoyable decks. The lack of diversity in the card pool also made it feel repetitive and uninteresting. I hope they take more time to test and balance future sets to provide a better overall experience for players.
- Daniel - 1 star - The upcoming Magic sets left me thoroughly unimpressed. The mechanics introduced were confusing and convoluted, making the gameplay more frustrating than enjoyable. Additionally, the limited card pool offered little variety, leading to repetitive and predictable matches. As a long-time Magic player, this was a major disappointment. I hope they reassess their design choices for future sets and focus on creating a more engaging and intuitive experience.
