Going Nuts: The Economic Impact of Squirrel Damage

By admin

The Curse of the Squirrel In many cultures around the world, squirrels are generally seen as playful and harmless creatures, scurrying about in trees and parks, collecting nuts and acorns. However, there exists a peculiar folk belief known as the Curse of the Squirrel, which attributes sinister and mischievous powers to these seemingly innocent animals. According to this belief, it is believed that if a squirrel enters one's home, it brings with it a curse that will bring bad luck and misfortune to the inhabitants of the house. This curse is said to manifest in various ways, ranging from financial problems to health issues and even accidents. Additionally, it is believed that once the curse is brought upon a household, it is nearly impossible to get rid of it. The origin of this superstition remains unclear, but it is likely rooted in the fear and mystique surrounding squirrels.

The origin of this superstition remains unclear, but it is likely rooted in the fear and mystique surrounding squirrels. Their ability to navigate trees with ease, their quick movements, and their shielding of precious food sources may have contributed to the belief that they possess supernatural powers. Furthermore, squirrels are known to cause damage to gardens and houses by gnawing on wood, which could have further fueled the belief in their cursed nature.

The Curse of the Brown Squirrel

Only a few miles from where the great and expansive I-75 meets the always-backed-up I-40, there sits a furniture store. This store may look unassuming at first glance, with it's plain exterior and unassuming background. You may think nothing of this building if you saw it for the first time, and you would undoubtedly think less of it if you lived in the area. Many drive by every day without giving it a second thought.

Yet, this place hides a dark secret. A very deceptive and troubling truth lurks beneath the surface, nay, the facade this place holds up to the light. For you see, the cute and caramel mascot that stands out front, plastered on a billboard, greeting every passerby with a blank stare, is more than meets the eye.

At one time, this was a real, living, breathing squirrel that ran among the trees and hills of the area, swerving cars and being a nuisance to dogs. He was playful, hungry, skittery, all the of the best qualities the creatures belonging to the Sciuridae family can have. Yet, on one fateful day, he commited a cardinal sin that would change his life forever. Our furry friend, juking out a toyota sienna right behind what would later become this fated hall of beds and cabinets, ran into a field contaiing many cows. His sudden appearance startled and angered the bovines in the area, and they ran away from the small creature in their midst. In the uproar, one small calf was separated from its mother and ran into the hills, just trying to find somewhere safe to stay. After the commotion settled down, the calf was discovered missing and was assumed dead. The cows cursed the squirrel to a life of limbo, staring at the statue of the mayfield cow across the busy interstate to forever remember his crime.

The squirrel contains much regret, much sadness, and much hate to this day. Looking into his eye is said to curse you as, as his rage spills from the beige and chocolate sign. But you have not to worry, as simply looking across to the other side, into the deep windows into the Mayfield cow's soul , the curse will be lifted

A friend told me when I first moved to knoxville many years ago of the curse of the brown squirrel, just a fun game like the 'punchbuggy' game, and it's stuck in my head since. I can't drive down 40 without feeling myself being drawn to sneak a peek, and then immediately feeling compelled to find the cow, knowing full well that obviously nothing will happen. And yet, bad things do start to happen if I miss the cow. Bad luck, or something more sinister.

While the Curse of the Squirrel might seem irrational to many, it continues to persist in certain cultures, leading to various rituals and practices aimed at warding off the supposed curse. For instance, some people believe that placing a stuffed toy squirrel in their homes would protect them from the curse. Others might resort to prayers or incantations to banish the curse. Despite the lack of scientific evidence supporting the existence of such a curse, the fear and belief in the Curse of the Squirrel highlights the power of superstition and folklore in shaping cultural beliefs and practices. It also serves as a reminder of the mysterious and often unfathomable aspects of the natural world that continue to captivate human imagination..
