The Moonlight Magic™ Crape Myrtle is a medium-sized tree that typically reaches a height of 10-15 feet. It is a deciduous tree, meaning it sheds its leaves in the winter. Moonlight Magic™ Crapemyrtle is blanketed in stunning panicles of white frilly flowers at the ends of the branches from mid summer to early fall. It has attractive purple deciduous foliage which emerges plum purple in spring. The glossy oval leaves are highly ornamental and turn dark red in fall.
Moonlight Magic™ Crapemyrtle is a dense multi-stemmed deciduous shrub with a narrowly upright and columnar growth habit. Its relatively fine texture sets it apart from other landscape plants with less refined foliage.
This shrub will require occasional maintenance and upkeep. Trim off the flower heads after they fade and die to encourage more blooms late into the season. It has no significant negative characteristics.

Moonlight Magic™ Crapemyrtle will grow to be about 12 feet tall at maturity, with a spread of 6 feet. It has a low canopy with a typical clearance of 1 foot from the ground, and is suitable for planting under power lines. It grows at a fast rate, and under ideal conditions can be expected to live for approximately 20 years.
This shrub does best in full sun to partial shade. It prefers to grow in average to moist conditions, and shouldn't be allowed to dry out. It is very fussy about its soil conditions and must have rich, acidic soils to ensure success, and is subject to chlorosis (yellowing) of the foliage in alkaline soils. It is highly tolerant of urban pollution and will even thrive in inner city environments. This particular variety is an interspecific hybrid.
Moonlight Magic™ Crapemyrtle makes a fine choice for the outdoor landscape, but it is also well-suited for use in outdoor pots and containers. Its large size and upright habit of growth lend it for use as a solitary accent, or in a composition surrounded by smaller plants around the base and those that spill over the edges. It is even sizeable enough that it can be grown alone in a suitable container. Note that when grown in a container, it may not perform exactly as indicated on the tag - this is to be expected. Also note that when growing plants in outdoor containers and baskets, they may require more frequent waterings than they would in the yard or garden.

Growing the Moonlight Magic Crape Myrtle
Size and Appearance
The Moonlight Magic Crape Myrtle starts the year with bold foliage in spring. The leaves are glossy, 2 inches long and 1 inch wide, and produced densely along the stems. These grow rapidly upwards to form an upright, rounded crown. Flowering begins in late July, and continues until at least the end of September, and often into October, depending on your growing zone. The showy flowers are carried in large clusters at the ends of the branches, and each cluster stays in flower for around two weeks. As it fades it is rapidly replaced by new flowering shoots, so your plant will be in bloom continuously. The flower clusters are rounded, and about 5 inches long, containing many individual flowers. These are rich purple in bud, and open pure white, so that the open flowers contrast strongly with the buds. The white flowers really stand out against the purple foliage, and they make a beautiful contrast that will brighten your garden and blend with all other flower and foliage colors.

One of the largest of the purple-leaf crape myrtles, this plant, reaching 12 feet tall and 6 feet wide, is an ideal small tree for a smaller garden, or a large shrub if you have plenty of garden space for a variety of plants. Because it brings both colored foliage and months of vibrant contrasting flower color too, it is ideal if you only have room for one or two larger plants in your garden. Grow it as specimen in a lawn or patio, as a row along a boundary or for screening, or plant it as background to smaller shrubs. Hardiness
The Moonlight Magic Crape Myrtle is hardy in zones 7, 8 and 9. It may also grow in zone 6, but with some winter damage, and re-sprout from the roots. It will grow 4 to 6 feet tall in the season when this happens.
Sun Exposure and Soil Conditions
Full sun is best for good results. Reduced flowering and greener leaves will be the result of growing it in the shade. Any well-drained soil is suitable, and once established this plant is drought tolerant and reliable even in hot, dry places.
Maintenance and Pruning
You can encourage continuous bloom by removing spend flower clusters as the last flower falls. Cut back just to the first leaf – new shoots will soon emerge and bloom. Stop doing this in early fall, so that you also get a crop of those handsome seed pods. You can trim your Moonlight Magic Crape Myrtle in late winter or early spring, before or at the same time as new growth emerges. To keep a smaller, more compact form, trim hard, cutting the previous-years growth back to just a couple of inches. For a larger bush, just remove the top section of the branches, and any broken or weak growth. The Midnight Magic Crape Myrtle is the product of careful breeding by experts in creating new varieties of ornamental plants. This plant was created in 2010 by Joshua Kardos, a breeder with Plant Introductions Inc. He used an earlier dark-leaf crape myrtle, ‘Chocolate Mocha’, developed in a state-financed breeding program at Mississippi State University. Kardos collected seed from this plant, grew it, and found the plant he called ‘PIILAG-V’ among the seedlings. Seeing its unique and valuable properties, he patented it in 2015, and it was released by Bailey Nurseries under the trademarked name of Midnight Magic™, as part of their First Editions® plant line.
