The Salem witch trials were a series of hearings and prosecutions of people accused of witchcraft in colonial Massachusetts between February 1692 and May 1693. The trials resulted in the executions of twenty people, fourteen of whom were women. The events that led to the witch trials began in January 1692 when Betty Paris, the nine-year-old daughter of the local minister, Samuel Paris, and her cousin Abigail Williams, started experiencing strange symptoms. These symptoms included fits, uncontrollable screaming, and contorting their bodies in unnatural ways. The girls claimed to be under the influence of witchcraft. The girls accused three women of being the cause of their afflictions - Tituba, a slave from Barbados, Sarah Good, a homeless woman, and Sarah Osborne, an elderly woman.
