So whatever mysterious magic potion or spell that was holding the Wicked Witch of the East together was possibly something the Wicked Witch of the West used to keep herself alive as well, even though Baum never elaborated upon this aspect.

We are first introduced to the character formally, when she arrives in munchkin land only to find that her sister the Wicked Witch of the East has been killed by having a house dropped on her. It is hard to say from this scene whether the Wicked Witch has any kind of compassion at all, when she sees that her sister has been killed she does not seem saddened, only angry.
