SDS Mailbag: Best upset chance vs. Georgia, most exciting SEC men’s hoops transfer and SEC Halloween ideas

I got a snarky comment on last week’s Mailbag asking how to get in touch with me to get questions into the weekly column.

For the last 4+ years, I’ve included a Twitter (or, more recently, X) hashtag and my email address at the bottom of this column. For this edition, I’ll also run it up here so no one is confused about how to reach me.

If you have questions for next week’s Mailbag (or any week’s Mailbag, really), tweet at us using #SDSMailbag or email me directly at [email protected].

Hope that clears up any confusion.

Now let’s dive into this week’s Mailbag questions!

Mark:

Which team remaining on Georgia’s regular-season schedule has the best shot at upsetting the Dawgs after their dominant performance against Kentucky?

I’ll probably get called a homer for this one, but why not Mizzou? The Tigers gave Georgia its biggest scare of the 2022 regular season, losing 26-22 at Faurot Field.

Yes, this year’s Georgia-Mizzou matchup is in Athens, which favors the Dawgs, but this Mizzou squad is better than last season’s team. Luther Burden has developed into a superstar. Brady Cook is playing much better at the quarterback position.

The Mizzou defense might not be as good as the 2022 version, but this could still very well be a team that hangs with Georgia for 3.5 quarters.

Ole Miss visits Sanford Stadium the week after Missouri and then the Dawgs head to Rocky Top to face the Vols. That’s a pretty tough 3-game stretch. Any one of those teams could upset No. 1 Georgia, but I’ll take Mizzou to keep the game closest.

Tony:

I know it’s early, but which incoming SEC men’s hoops transfer are you most excited to see in action this year?

I haven’t had a ton of time to dive into SEC basketball preseason stuff just yet, but 3 names come to mind as guys I’m excited to see. To no one’s surprise, a pair of them are at Arkansas, where Eric Musselman continues to be a master of the transfer portal.

Those 3 players are: El Ellis (Louisville to Arkansas), Tramon Mark (Houston to Arkansas) and Brandon Murray (Georgetown to Ole Miss after starting his career at LSU).

Mark, Ellis and Devo Davis have the chance to form one of the best (and most experienced) backcourts in the entire country.

RJ Melendez going from Illinois to Georgia also intrigues me, for the record. My homer pick? Tamar Bates (Indiana to Mizzou) should be fun.

Harrison:

Ray Davis leads the SEC in rushing yards through 6 games (653 yards and 8 TDs). Can anyone catch him or is he literally going to run away with the SEC rushing crown?

It’ll be tough to catch him, definitely. He’s been incredible so far this year since transferring to Kentucky from Vanderbilt. Mizzou’s Cody Schrader is second with 577 yards through 6 games.

Last year’s rushing champ, Ole Miss star Quinshon Judkins, is off to a slower start this year, posting only 443 yards through 6 contests. He’s averaging only 4.1 yards per carry despite leading the SEC with 108 carries through the first half of the year.

Arkansas’s Rocket Sanders has battled injuries and has only played in 3 games so far.

My pick is definitely Davis. Schrader still has to face the Georgia defense and has other tough matchups on his schedule. Davis has difficult games remaining, too, but he’s shown he can put up yards against anyone. He’s been super fun to watch so far this year.

Hopefully he doesn’t run for too many yards on Saturday against my Missouri Tigers, though!

@Dobbe8:

What are a couple of good SEC-themed Halloween costume ideas?

It’s low-hanging fruit at this point, but bashing SEC officials is always a good idea. I’ve seen some pretty good blind officials costumes in recent years.

Ole Miss fans could dress up as a mustard bottle to troll Tennessee fans for last year’s game. Mississippi State fans could dress up as cowbells (I’ve never been to Starkville on Halloween, but I assume that happens somewhat often there).

Alabama fans can grab a houndstooth fedora and go as Bear Bryant. Auburn fans can either cover themselves in toilet paper and go as a Toomer’s Corner oak or recreate Bo Jackson’s iconic shoulder pads and baseball bat Sports Illustrated picture.

I’m sure I’m missing some other obvious ones (other than standard “go as a player, coach or mascot” ideas). I’ve also always thought it would be cute to see a dog dressed up as a Razorback or Gator.
